Gannon Baseball Loses a Pair to Wayne State at RussMatt Invitational

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team dropped a pair of games to Wayne State University Tuesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale, Fla. The Golden Knights lost to the Warriors 10-9 and 12-6.  

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • The Golden Knights got out to a three-run lead in the top of the first. With two outs, Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) scored Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) from second base on an RBI single to center field. Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) sent Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) and Quiceno home the next at-bat with a double to right field.
  • The Warriors matched Gannon's three runs in the bottom of the inning thanks in part to JT Conti's two-run double.
  • Wayne State scored three more runs in the second to take the lead, one on an error and two more on an RBI double by Conti.
  • Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) put two runs on the scoreboard in the fourth with a two-run single to center field.
  • Conti continued his stellar performance in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to right field to give his team a 7-5 lead.
  • In the fifth, Mori belted a two-run homer to center field that tied up the game at 7-7.
  • Justin Kelly put Wayne State up two-runs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to left field. Brandon Williams gave the Warriors another run on an RBI single to right field.
  • Gannon scored a pair of runs on wild pitches in the seventh inning, but its rally fell short as Wayne State won game one of the doubleheader, 10-9.

GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Mori finished the game with four RBI and two hits.
  • Quiceno and Oruch also had two hits in the loss.
  • Jonathan Pence (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) took the loss for the Golden Knights.
  • Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) had a game-high four strikeouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Mori's four RBI in the loss is a career high.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Wayne State scored two runs in the top of the first on a pair of GU errors.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) doubled to center field. Colosi scored him the next at-bat on a double to right field.
  • The Warriors built on their lead in the second with three more runs, thanks to Conti's three-run bomb.
  • Nicolia recorded an RBI single to left field in the bottom half of the inning to cut into Wayne State's lead, 5-2.
  • The Warriors added four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to lead 12-2.
  • In the seventh, Tyler Mattocks (Titusville, Pa./Maplewood) scored a pair of runs with a two-run single to right field. Gannon scored two more runs on a bases-loaded walk and a fielding error.

GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Nicolia recorded two hits and an RBI in the loss.
  • Mattocks had a career-high two RBI.
  • Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) took the loss for the Golden Knights. He tallied six strike outs.
  • Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) and Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) also saw time on the mound.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Colosi has a four-game hitting streak.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be back in action Wednesday, February 28 at the RussMatt Invitational.
