Gannon Baseball Defeats Michigan-Dearborn 10-2; Splits Doubleheader in Winter Haven, Fla.

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team played Michigan-Dearborn to a doubleheader split Wednesday morning at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla. The Wolverines scored seven runs in the sixth inning to come back for a 10-3 win in game one, before the Golden Knights bounced back with a 10-2 victory in the second game.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Michigan-Dearborn recorded four hits in the first inning en route a two-run lead.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) was hit by a pitch, giving Gannon its first run of the game. Austin O'Shei (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) tied it up when he scored Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) from third on a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • O'Shei recorded another RBI in the fourth inning, scoring Robert Piechnick, to give Gannon a 3-2 lead.
  • The next inning, the Wolverines tied it up at 3-3 with an RBI by Waymond Lemon Jr.
  • Michigan-Dearborn poured on seven runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for the Golden Knights.

GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • O'Shei finished the game with two RBI and one hit.
  • Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) and Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) had two hits apiece for the Golden Knights.
  • Alex Dobry (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) took the loss for GU. He struck out four in five innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Cox put the Golden Knights on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI single to right field that scored Colosi from second.
  • Cox added to Gannon's lead in the second inning on a two-run single, scoring Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island).
  • In the third inning, Gannon got one run on a throwing error. Steighner and Colosi smacked RBIs and Cardy followed with a sacrifice fly out to center field, scoring Nicolia. Gannon led 7-0 after three.
  • Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) belted a homer to left field in the fourth and Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) scored Colosi on a RBI double to center in the fifth to make it 9-0.
  • Michigan-Dearborn recorded two runs in the bottom of the fifth for its only runs of the game.
  • Nicolia gave Gannon one more run in the sixth with a RBI single to right field.

GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Cox finished game two with three hits and three RBI.
  • Colosi and Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) also recorded three hits.
  • Brandon Weber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) got the win after pitching 4.2 innings. He made two strikeouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Colosi has recorded at least one hit in each of the last six games.
  • Mori now has a team-high two home run and eight RBI.
  • Wednesday is Weber's first career win.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be back in action Friday, March 2 at the RussMatt Invitational.
  • The Golden Knights will face the University of Mary at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
