Gannon Women’s Water Polo Splits at Penn State Behrend Tournament

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team suffered a 14-10 loss to Lindenwood in exhibition action Saturday morning at the Penn State Behrend Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lindenwood held Gannon to just one goal in the entire first half. The Lions recorded three scores in the first period followed by five more in the second to take an 8-1 lead at intermission.
  • Grace Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) recorded Gannon's lone first half goal.
  • Coming back from the break, the Lady Knights outscored the Lions 5-3 in the third quarter to cut it to 10-6. Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored a pair of goals in the third to lead Gannon in the surge.
  • Once again, Gannon outscored Lindenwood in the fourth frame, 4-3. The halftime deficit would be too much to make up, as the Lions avenged Friday night's loss at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion with a 14-10 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Cooney led Gannon in the loss with four goals and one assist.
  • Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) added two goals and two assists.
  • Villano finished the game with two goals and one steal.
  • Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) had a strong defensive performance, making five steals for the Lady Knights. Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) recorded three steals.
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) 11 saves for Gannon in the loss.

  • The Short Story: The Lady Knights improved to 4-5 on the year with a 17-8 win against host Penn State Behrend Saturday evening at the Penn State Behrend Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon jumped out to a 6-2 first period lead thanks in part to a pair of goals by Williamson.
  • The Lady Knights continued to control the game in the second period where they outscored the Lions 4-1 to take a 10-3 halftime advantage.
  • Penn State Behrend saw some life in the second half when the team outscored Gannon 3-1 to cut it to 11-6 at the end of the third.
  • The Lady Knights pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring the Lions 6-2. Gannon closed out the game with four unanswered goals to win it, 17-8.  

GAME NOTES
  • Williamson finished the game with a career-high five goals to go with three assists and two steals.
  • Cooney recorded her second straight four-goal game in the win.  
  • Barr added three goals, while Lauren Rinderle (Erie, Pa./Fairview) had three assists and four steals.
  • Vieira made 10 saves in the cage and added four assists.
