  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team dropped a 12-7 contest against undefeated Virginia Military Institute Sunday morning at the Mercyhurst Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Virginia Military Institute scored in the opening minute of the contest before Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored back-to-back goals for Gannon to give the Lady Knights a one-goal lead.
  • The Keydets recorded two straight goals to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period.
  • VMI built on its lead in the second period by outscoring Gannon 5-2. Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) scored goals for the Lady Knights in the second frame.
  • VMI led 8-4 at halftime.
  • The Keydets opened the third period with back-to-back goals. Ruh recorded her second goal of the game with 3:24 left in the third.
  • VMI closed out the third period with one more goal and Cooney scored with 1:08 left. Gannon trailed 11-6 with one quarter to play.
  • Ruh scored 1:55 into the fourth frame and VMI scored once more with 1:46 left on the clock to win it, 12-7.

GAME NOTES
  • Ruh scored three goals and contributed two assists.
  • Cooney finished the game with three goals and four steals.
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) had a solid game in the cage after recording 11 saves and two steals.

  • The Short Story: The Lady Knights wrapped up their weekend at the Mercyhurst Invitational with an 18-16 win against Siena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon and Siena played to a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period. Cooney and Ruh scored goals for the Lady Knights.
  • Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) scored the first two goals of the second period for the Lady Knights. Siena scored once more before Gannon scored the five unanswered goals.
  • Siena went on to outscore Gannon 4-1 in the final minutes of the period. Gannon held a 10-7 halftime lead.
  • In the third period, the Lady Knights outscored the Saints 4-3 to lead 14-10 after three periods of action.
  • Gannon scored four goals in the fourth period and held off a charging Siena squad that scored six fourth-period goals.

GAME NOTES
  • Ruh, Fountain, Cooney and Williamson each scored four goals for the Lady Knights.
  • Vieira recorded seven saves in her third win of the season.
  • Vieira now has 147 career saves, which is eighth all-time at Gannon.
