  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team earned its first victory of the season Saturday morning with a 15-11 win against St. Francis (N.Y.) at the Mercyhurst Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers got out to a 4-3 lead in the first period. Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley), Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) and Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) scored goals for the Lady Knights.
  • St. Francis built on its lead in the second period by outscoring Gannon 3-2 to take a 7-5 halftime lead.
  • The Lady Knights came out strong in the second half, sparked by Fountain's third goal of the contest just 1:26 into the third period. Gannon outscored St. Francis 6-3 to take an 11-10 lead at the end of the third.
  • In the fourth period, Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Williamson put the Lady Knights up 13-10 with six minutes left in the game. St. Francis scored its final goal with 4:01 remaining Cooney and Barr recorded goals for Gannon in the final minutes to win it, 15-11.

GAME NOTES
  • Fountain, Cooney and Williamson finished the game with four goals apiece.
  • Williamson added three assists, while Fountain had two.
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) recorded seven goals for the Lady Knights in the cage.

  • Location: Cathedral Prep Event Center – Erie, Pa.
  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights went undefeated on the opening day of the Mercyhurst Invitational with a 14-8 win against La Salle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In game two, Gannon got out to a 3-2 lead in the first period. Ruh scored one goal and added assists on the other two goals.
  • Williamson ignited Gannon's four-goal second period just 0:07 seconds into the frame. The Lady Knights outscored La Salle 4-1 to take a 7-3 halftime lead.
  • Cooney (2) and Ruh helped Gannon build on its lead with goals in the third period. Gannon led 10-5 after three quarters of action.
  • Williamson and Ruh opened the fourth period with back-to-back goals to give Gannon its largest lead of the game. La Salle and Gannon exchanged goals for the rest of the game as Gannon cruised to a 14-8 win.

GAME NOTES
  • Ruh led Gannon with three goals and four assists. She also had five steals.
  • Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School), Cooney and Williamson also recorded three goals apiece.
  • Isabelle Viera made 10 saves in the cage while dishing out three assists.
  • Cooney is at 155 career goals, which is the seventh-most in program history. 
  • Barr now has 94 career goals, which tabs her at 13th in Gannon history.

  • Gannon will continue action at the Mercyhurst Invitational on Sunday morning against Virginia Military Institute. Game time is set for 8 a.m.
