  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights fell in a heartbreaker to the Seton Hill Griffins on Monday (Jan. 8) in the Hammermill Center. Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) paced the Lady Knights with a career-high 23 points but Seton Hill hit the go-ahead bucket with 4.5 seconds remaining to seal a 79-78 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill rolled out to a pair of early five-point leads at 12-7 and 16-11 in the opening six minutes of play.
  • Gannon inched back just before the end of the first quarter to take its first lead of the game. Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) knocked down a triple, giving Gannon a 21-19 lead.
  • Seton Hill hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to reclaim a 22-21 advantage at the first intermission. Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) paced the Lady Knights with nine points in the opening stanza.
  • Gannon had its first two-possession lead after LaCava connected on a layup at the 4:55 mark, Gannon up 33-29.
  • The Lady Knights continued to push to score as they went to the break with a 44-36 lead. Gannon outscored the Griffins 23-14 in the second quarter, converting on all nine of its shot attempts.
  • Gannon kept the Griffins at bay in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) had a Lady Knights' layup at the 5:02 mark to push the GU lead to double-digits, 58-48.
  • The Lady Knights had a 65-56 advantage headed to the final period. LaCava pacing Gannon with 21 points.
  • The Griffins began to claw back in the fourth. Lindsey Mifsud had Seton Hill to within a single point after she netted a three at the 7:07 mark, 67-66.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) helped give Gannon some breathing room as the Lady Knights had a 71-66 lead with 4:42 remaining.
  • Gannon held a 75-69 lead before the conference-leading three-point team knocked down consecutive threes just 27 seconds apart to tie the game at 75 with 2:07 remaining.
  • Next trip down the floor, Jenna Kaufman gave the griffins their first lead since the first quarter, 77-75, with 1:23 remaining.
  • Gannon responded on the other end of the floor, Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) kicked the ball to Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) in the left corner for a wide-open triple and she buried it. Gannon led, 78-77.
  • Seton Hill answered last, however. Jenna Kaufman delivered the go-ahead bucket with just 4.5 seconds remaining, sealing a 79-78 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon made 27-of-46 shots, a .584 clip. It's the second time the Lady Knights shot at least 50 percent in a game this season.
  • Seton Hill made 29-of-71 field goals, a 40.8 percent conversion rate.
  • Three Lady Knights registered double-figures in scoring. LaCava led Gannon with 23 points, followed by M. Mitchell's 18-point effort and Chelse Rourke's 10th consecutive double-digit performance (13 points).
  • There were 12 lead changes and five ties in the game.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon Women's Basketball was back at the Hammermill Center for the first time in 50 days with Monday's game against Seton Hill. The Lady Knights finished an eight-game road trip with a 76-68 victory at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Jan. 6.
  • The Lady Knights lost their first game of the season when scoring at least 60 points. Gannon was 7-0 prior to Monday's 79-78 defeat.
  • LaCava recorded a career-high 23 points, including a career-best 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and was just one point shy of a double-double, posting nine in the game.
  • Gannon out-rebounded its fourth opponent of the season as the Lady Knights pulled down 36 compared to Pitt-Johnstown's 27.
