  • The Short Story: A fast start by the No. 10-ranked California (Pa.) Lady Vulcans proved to be too much as the Gannon Lady Knights fell, 71-53, on Wednesday night. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) paced the Lady Knights with 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • California (Pa.) forged its way to an early 24-6 advantage in the first five-plus minutes of the game.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) buried a three-pointer at the 3:33 mark of the first quarter to begin to get some traction for the Lady Knights.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) nailed a jumper at the first-quarter buzzer to help propel the Lady Knights to a 12-2 run, pulling Gannon back to within 30-23 at the 4:57 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Lady Vulcans pushed back out to a 37-23 lead by halftime.
  • Gannon began the second half on a 6-0 run to get back within single digits, 37-29. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) capped off the spurt with a layup at the 7:50 mark.
  • The Lady Vulcan lead hit double-digits again before M. Mitchell connected on a triple to get the Lady Knights back to a seven-point hole, 41-34 with 5:15 remaining in the quarter.
  • Bianca Jasper ended the period with a half-court heave that found net for California (Pa.). The Lady Vulcans led 52-40 headed to the final 10 minutes.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) opened the fourth quarter converting a pair of free throws. Gannon shot 9-of-10 from the stripe, a 90 percent clip.
  • California (Pa.) ensued with an 8-0 run to push the lead back out to 18 points, 60-42 with 5:09 remaining.
  • Gannon got back to within 15 but couldn't close the gap in the final minutes, falling 71-53.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot 40 percent from the field for the sixth time this season. The Lady Knights made 20 of 46 shots (43.5 percent) but committed 22 turnovers.
  • GU shot a season-few 10 three-pointers in the game, making four. It was the third game this season the Lady Knights made at least 40 percent of their shots from behind the arc.
  • California (Pa.) made 26 of 63 shots from the field, a 41.3 percent conversion rate.
  • The Lady Vulcans held a slight 34-31 edge on the boards.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon tied a program record playing in its seventh consecutive road game in a season. The Lady Knights last home game was Nov. 19 against Cheyney (W, 79-70).
  • M. Mitchell recorded her eighth 15+ point game of the season. She also made three triples, extending her conference lead averaging 2.9 three-pointers made per game.
  • LaCava tied a career-high with six made free throws in the game. She finished with eight points, a rebound and an assist.
  • Ruta Vetra (Jurmala, Latvia/Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.J.)) and Rourke tied for a team-high six rebounds in the game. Vetra made her first start in a Lady Knight uniform, playing a season-high 16 minutes.
     
UP NEXT
  • Gannon heads to Pitt-Johnstown for its eighth and final game of the Lady Knights' program record road stretch. The Lady Knights have never played eight consecutive road games in a season.
  • Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
  • Gannon swept both of last year's matchups and has won eight in-a-row over the Mountain Cats dating back to the 2013-14 season.
