Gannon Women's Basketball Secures 76-68 Road Victory at Pitt-Johnstown

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights capped off their eight-game road trip with a 76-68 victory over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Jan. 6. The Lady Knights were powered by Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark)'s 21 and Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory)'s 19-point efforts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) opened the game with a triple off a Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) pass. Gannon lead 3-0.
  • Gannon built a four-point lead at the 4:58 mark after Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) buried another Lady Knight three-pointer. Gannon lead the Mountain Cats, 8-4.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) collected the final bucket of the first quarter for the Lady Knights. Gannon held a one-point edge, 13-12, headed to the second period.
  • The Mountain Cats and Lady Knights exchanged buckets to begin the second quarter. Gannon pulled out to three four-point leads but each time Pitt-Johnstown responded with a bucket of its own. The game was tied at 25 at the 5:41 mark.
  • Gannon followed with a 7-0 run capped off by a Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) three-pointer. Gannon expanded to its lead to 32-25.
  • The Lady Knights went to the break with a 41-34 advantage. M. Mitchell lead with 13 first-half points. Braungart also chipped in nine for Gannon.
  • Gannon's lead hit double-digits, 57-47, after Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) knocked down a triple at the 3:14 mark of the third quarter.
  • The Mountain Cats ended the period on a 6-2 run to claw back within 59-53.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) opened the fourth quarter connecting on four free throws, giving Gannon a 63-55 lead with seven minutes left.
  • The Mountain Cats made a charge, cutting the deficit to just two points, 63-61, at the 4:47 mark after a pair of Gabrielle Smith free throws.
  • Gannon rallied with a 9-2 run over the following three minutes to jump back out to a 72-63 lead with 1:40 remaining.
  • The Lady Knights closed out the final minute-plus and collected a 76-68 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon made 22-of-58 shots from the field, a 37.9 percent clip. Pitt-Johnstown made 24-of-53 shots (45.3 percent).
  • The Lady Knights hit 9-of-23 shots from behind the arc, a 39.1 percent conversion rate.
  • Gannon made a season-high 23 free throws. The Lady Knights were 23-of-30 from the stripe (76.7 percent). The Mountain Cats were 18-of-22 from the free throw line (81.8 percent).
  • LaCava recorded a career-high 19 points on six-of-nine shooting. She also made a career-most seven free throws in the game.
  • M. Mitchell recorded her seventh 20-point game of the season with 21 points, converting on four-of-six three pointers.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon played in its eighth consecutive road game this season, a program record. The Lady Knights previously played in seven road/neutral contests to end the 1987-88 season.
  • The Lady Knights have won nine straight games over Pitt-Johnstown dating back to the 2013-14 season.
  • Gannon is 7-0 when reaching the 60-point plateau this season.

  • Gannon returns home to face Seton Hill on Monday, Jan. 8, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-West Division matchup.
