  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights held off Clarion, 50-46, on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Tippin Gymnasium. Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) paced the Lady Knights with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon bolted out to a 9-3 lead to begin the game, including four from Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory).
  • Clarion closed the gap, inching to within 15-13 at the end of the quarter. LaCava led the Lady Knights with six points.
  • Ruta Vetra (Jurmala, Latvia/Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.J.)) pushed the Gannon lead to eight points, 21-13, after grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it back up for two.
  • The Lady Knights clung to a 23-17 advantage at halftime.
  • Gannon's biggest lead of the afternoon came at the 7:35 mark of the third quarter after Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) drained a three-pointer, giving the Lady Knights a 31-22 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles followed with an 11-3 run to close the gap to within one, 34-33, at the 3:49 mark of the third quarter.
  • Clarion opened up the fourth quarter taking its first lead of the day, 37-36, after Yndiah Bobo hit a bucket in the paint.
  • Taylor Moltz connected on a three to give Clarion a four-point lead, 40-36, with 6:57 remaining in the game.
  • LaCava broke the Golden Eagles' momentum with a layup that sparked a 7-0 run for Gannon. The Lady Knights led 43-40 with 3:46 remaining.
  • With Gannon leading 46-44, Clarion tried to tie the game up with 0:33 remaining. Amesha Harden-Pullium missed a jumper and LaCava grabbed the rebound.
  • Gannon went six-for-six in the final minute from the charity stripe to seal a 50-46 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon made 13-of-37 shots (35.1 percent), while Clarion hit on 18-of-68 field goals (26.5 percent).
  • The Lady Knights outscored Clarion, 10-5, in second-chance points and 18-16 on points in the paint.
  • There were two ties and two lead changes in the game.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon hadn't taken 37 shots or less in a game before Saturday since at least 2002.
  • The Lady Knights took 31 less shots than Clarion, but won the game. The last time Gannon took 29 or less shots than its opponent and won a game was Nov. 20, 2013 against California (Pa.). The Lady Knights connected on 19-of-38 shots compared to California's 22-of-67, and won 73-64.
  • LaCava produced the second double-double of her career with 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
  • Rourke also registered a career-high 12 rebounds and four blocks in the game.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) also had a season-best three stuffs against Clarion.
  • It was the first time this season the Lady Knights only had one player score in double-figures and won the game since the 2013-14 season.
     
UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 17, for the Porreco Pride of Erie game against the Mercyhurst Lakers.
  • The Pride of Erie game was extended to the women's game this season as both the men's and women's teams will play for the Porreco Pride of Erie trophy.
  • The teams hold on to the trophy until the next regular season matchup.
