  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights throttled the Mercyhurst Lakers in the inaugural Women's Porreco Pride of Erie game on Wednesday night, 85-57. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) was named the Porreco Pride of Erie "Game-Changer" with 28 points and nine assists for the Lady Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon bolted out to a 10-0 lead in the opening three minutes and 24 seconds of play. The run featured three-pointers from Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) and Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering).
  • The Lady Knights stretched the lead to 17-2 after Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) and M. Mitchell went back-to-back from the field.
  • Mercyhurst closed to within 22-11 by the end of the first quarter. Five Lady Knights tallied points in the opening quarter, including eight from M. Mitchell.
  • Gannon pushed its lead back to 15 points, 29-14, at the 5:57 mark of the second quarter. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) made good on a layup in the paint.
  • The Lady Knights owned their largest lead of the first half, 40-21, as Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) connected on a deuce with just 18 seconds remaining in the half. M. Mitchell paced the Knights with 17 points on six-of-nine shooting.
  • The third quarter proved to be much of the same as the first half. Gannon continued to pour on the points as the Lady Knights began the second half on a 15-4 run. GU took stake with a 30-point lead, 55-25.
  • Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) made the lead 32, 66-34, as she made a layup off glass for the final bucket in the third quarter.
  • Rourke had the Lady Knights' first five points in the fourth quarter, giving Gannon its largest lead of the game at 71-36.
  • Mercyhurst produced a 17-8 run over the next five-plus minutes to pull within 79-53 but the game was still out of reach with just a handful of minutes left.
  • Gannon closed out the game with an 85-57 victory in the first women's Porreco Pride of Erie game.
     
GAME NOTES
  • M. Mitchell was named the Porreco Pride of Erie "Game Changer" with 28 points and nine assists.
  • Gannon made 33-of-61 shots (54.1 percent), while Mercyhurst hit on 22-of-54 shots (40.7 percent).
  • M. Mitchell's nine-assist night represented a career-high.
  • The Lady Knights led from start to finish in the game, outscoring Mercyhurst, 42-24, on points in the paint and 23-8 on points off turnovers.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's 28-point victory was the largest of the season.
  • The Lady Knights' 85 points were the most since Jan. 3, 2016 at Kutztown, winning, 85-76, in overtime. The 85 were the most points in regulation since Nov. 15, 2014 when the Lady Knights downed Glenville State, 94-77, at the Hammermill Center.
  • Rourke posted back-to-back 10+ rebound games for the first time in her career and the first Lady Knight since Lanise Saunders had three 10+ rebound games in the 2016-17.
  • Gannon's 33 field -goals made and 12 three-pointers made were season-best figures for GU.
  • The Lady Knights were perfect from the free-throw line (7-7) for the first time since Nov. 17, 2006 against St. Joseph's College.
  • Gannon also committed its second-fewest amount of turnovers in a game this season with just seven.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon hosts Millersville in the 11th Annual Pink Zone game on Saturday, Jan. 20. (1 p.m.)
  • The event honors and recognizes breast cancer survivors while helping raise funds for breast cancer research and those affected by the disease.
  • The Gannon women's basketball program spearheads the festivities that raised $9,313 as a result of last year's Pink Zone with the funds staying local. The first 10 Pink Zone games and related fundraising activities have successfully raised $132,422 to join in the fight against breast cancer.
  • Admission is free, but donations to help fight cancer are greatly appreciated.
  • An indoor survivor walk will lead up to a ceremonial tip-off on the court prior to the women's game. If you are a survivor and would like to participate, please contact Gannon women's basketball assistant coach Christina Harvey at (814) 871-7657.
  • All survivors, friends and families are invited to be part of the 11th Annual Pink Zone. The event will include a celebration of survivors, raffles and prizes, information tables in the front lobby and official 2018 Pink Zone t-shirts for $10.
