Gannon Bullpen Lights Out During Non-Conference Baseball Setback Against Notre Dame (Ohio)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Notre Dame (Ohio) 7, at Gannon 3
  • Records: Gannon (13-11), Notre Dame (Ohio) (7-20)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon bullpen didn't allow a run over 5 2/3 innings, but Notre Dame's early damage was enough during a 7-3 road victory Wednesday afternoon in a single nine-inning contest at McConnell Family Stadium.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Notre Dame went right to work during its first at-bat, scoring three times on three hits.
  • The Falcons increased their lead to 4-0 with a single run during the top of the second inning.
  • Gannon punched back with a pair of runs during the bottom of the frame. Junior Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) drew a walk and scored on junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville)'s two-out triple down the right field line. Two batters later, Cox scored on an infield single by freshman Austin O'Shei (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg).
  • Notre Dame created some breathing room during the top of the fourth inning when Danny Beaver blasted a three-run home run over the right field netting and onto Fifth Street.
  • The score remained the same until Gannon added one more run during its last at-bat. Cox led off with another triple to right center and came home on an RBI ground-out by redshirt senior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) to cap the scoring.

GAME NOTES
  • Wednesday's non-conference game was scheduled as a nine-inning contest.
  • Eight different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Cox led the way with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, two triples, two runs and one RBI.
  • Sophomore Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) started on the mound for the third time in his career, but was making his first appearance of the 2017 campaign.
  • Redshirt junior Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview), junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) and sophomore Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) followed to clean up the final 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
  • Vargo started the relief work with no runs in 3 2/3 innings, surrendering three hits. He struck out four and walked one.
  • Colosi pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
  • Hegedus capped the bullpen performance with a scoreless ninth inning.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights suffered their first loss in four games that were scheduled as nine-inning contests this season.

  • Cox moved past Loren Marz (1970-73) and into second place all-time at Gannon with 11 career triples. He needs five more to break the program's all-time record of 15 set by Michael Tomko (2010-13).
  • Redshirt sophomore Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) extended his hit streak to four games with a third-inning single.
  • Cox recorded his sixth multiple-hit game of the season, tying his career-high of three hits for the 14th time.
  • Hegedus has not allowed a run in three appearances this year, spanning four innings.
  • Cox scored multiple runs for the third time this season.
