HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Slippery Rock appeared ready to make the opener a laugher with six runs during the top of the first inning. Six of the first seven batters recorded a hit, capped by Joe Campagna's three-run homer to left field.
  • The difference remained the same until Gannon began its comeback with three runs during the bottom of the fourth inning. The first three hitters produced a run when freshman Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) walked, freshman Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) singled to right field and senior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) singled down the right field line. Four batters later, junior Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) drove home two more runs with a single to center field.
  • The bottom of the fifth inning is when everything came unglued for Slippery Rock. Gannon sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on only two hits. The inning featured five walks, two hit by pitches and two wild pitches.
  • After two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out, junior Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) ripped a bases-clearing double past a diving third baseman and down the left field line to tie the contest at six. He then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. The outburst was capped by a bases-loaded walk to Beach and two-run single up the middle by Quiceno. After the dust settled, the Golden Knights held a 10-6 lead after five innings.
  • Gannon added an insurance run during the bottom of the sixth inning. Callaway singled to right field, stole second base and scored on Colosi's two-out double to left center field.
  • Meanwhile, senior Santiago Mendez (Potterville, Mich./Lansing Eastern) was dealing after the rocky first inning. He allowed only one hit while shutting the Rock out during the final six innings.
  • Mendez set Slippery Rock down in order during each of the final two frames to secure an 11-6 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Seven different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Callaway went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
  • Colosi finished 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.
  • Quiceno completed the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Restuccia also recorded a pair of hits while Beach scored multiple runs.
  • Mendez improved to 2-0 with a complete-game performance, striking out six and walking two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Slippery Rock is tabbed No. 7 in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings.
  • Gannon's rally from six runs down was its biggest since overcoming a 10-1 deficit during an 11-10 victory against Wheeling Jesuit March 1, 2016 at the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.
  • Mendez became the 11th Golden Knight since 2000 to record nine career victories and 15th to start 20 games on the mound.
  • Gannon reached double digits in runs for the eighth time this season and for the first time since a 15-6 victory against California (Pa.) April 17 at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Mendez moved into Gannon's all-time top 10 since 2000 in strikeouts with 85, tying Paul McKenna (2011-12) for 10th place.
  • Gannon recorded double-digit hits for the 17th time this season and double-digit RBIs for the sixth time.
  • Junior Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) extended his team-best hit streak to six games with a lead-off single.
  • Callaway tied his season-high with three RBIs.
  • Colosi recorded his team-best seventh multiple-RBI game of the season with his third performance of at least three RBIs. He also moved into a tie for the team lead with his 12th multiple-hit game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • As it did during the opener, Slippery Rock jumped on Gannon first with four runs during the top of the third inning.
  • The Golden Knights countered with their first tally during the bottom of the frame when Callaway blasted a lead-off home run to left field.
  • Slippery Rock regained its four-run lead with an insurance run during the top of the sixth inning.
  • Gannon attempted to rally again during the bottom of the sixth inning. Singles by junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville), senior Andrew Wagner (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Restuccia loaded the bases. Junior Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) followed with an RBI single to center field and Callaway hit a sacrifice fly that cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • The Golden Knights still had two runners on base in the sixth inning, before Wyatt Daughtery came out of the bullpen to end the threat with a strikeout. He then retired the side in the seventh to earn his third save.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Nine different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Quiceno and Oruch led Gannon's 11-hit attack with two safeties each.
  • Callaway finished 1-for-2 with one run and two RBIs.
  • Redshirt senior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) started on the mound, logging four innings.
  • Junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) and sophomore Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) tossed a scoreless inning each in relief.
  • Colosi struck out the side in the sixth while Hegedus set down two hitters via the strikeout in the seventh.

  • Nicolia extended his team-best hit streak to seven games with a third-inning double.
  • Callaway moved into a tie with Colosi for the team lead in multiple-RBI games (7).
  • Quiceno and Oruch recorded their eighth and sixth multiple-hit games of the season, respectively.
