Gannon Women's Basketball Remains Perfect in Conference Play with 69-60 Victory at Shippensburg

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball moved to 3-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action with a 69-60 victory over Shippensburg on Saturday, Dec. 2. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) led the Lady Kngihts with 21 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened up the game on an 8-3 run that included a Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) three-pointer.
  • The Lady Knights closed out the first quarter with a 14-5 edge, led by Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland)'s six points.
  • Shippensburg inched back to within one point, 14-13, at the 5:26 mark of the second quarter. Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) responded with a triple of her own to give the Lady Knights some breathing room at 17-13.
  • Rourke gave Gannon the largest lead of the half at 27-18 with a three at the 1:20 mark of the second quarter.
  • The Lady Knights went to halftime with an eight-point lead, 29-21. Rourke paced GU with nine at the break. Gannon was 12-of-28 from the field in the first half while Shippensburg was 8-of-28.
  • Gannon's lead hit double-digits, 47-37, in the second half with a Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) layup.
  • The Lady Knights had a 45-38 lead headed to the fourth quarter.
  • Shippensburg cut the lead to just three points after a Jones three-pointer, 52-49, at the 6:17 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • M. Mitchell responded 20 seconds later with a long-range shot that put Gannon back up by six, 55-49.
  • Shippensburg never got closer than six as Gannon outscored the Raiders, 17-11, over the final six minutes.
  • Gannon sealed the game with eight free throws in the final minute of play, winning, 69-60.  
     
GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights were 45.3% from the field (24-of-53), while Shippensburg shot 22 of 652 (42.3%).
  • Gannon had a season-low 12 turnovers in the game.
  • The Lady Knights held a 32-30 advantage on points in the paint.
  • Gannon was 8 of 23 from long-range, marking the fifth straight game of making at least eight threes.

  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark)'s 21-point effort against the Raiders marks back-to-back 20+ point performances for the senior. Mitchell had a season-high 29 points at Daemen on Tuesday.
