Maggie Mitchell Nets 26; Gannon Lady Knights Fall in Final Minute at Kutztown

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Kutztown 65, Gannon 59

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball fell in the final moments of Sunday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest, 65-59, at Kutztown. Tied at 59, the Golden Bears hit go-ahead free throws with 1:09 remaining in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon used a fast start to jump out to an 11-4 lead in the first six-plus minutes of the game. The run included threes from Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland).
  • The Lady Knights held a six-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 13-7 over the Golden bears.
  • Kutztown inched back to within 13-11 at the 7:13 mark of the second quarter before M. Mitchell hit another triple.
  • The Lady Knights used a mini 8-0 run to create some distance, up 21-11 with 3:28 remaining.
  • Gannon went to the break with a 29-19 lead.
  • Kutztown began its comeback in the third quarter. Taylor Thames tallied the first bucket of the second half as Kutztown outscored Gannon, 13-2, in the opening seven minutes.
  • Kutztown headed to the fourth quarter with a 40-37 lead.
  • The Lady Knights fought back to tie the game at 48, on a M. Mitchell three-pointer at the 6:07 mark of the fourth quarter.
  • Rourke followed with a pair of free throws to put Gannon back up 50-48.
  • The two teams battled late down the stretch. Rylee Derr gave Kutztown a 54-53 lead on a three with 3:23 remaining, before Rourke made two more free throws to reclaim a 55-54 lead for Gannon.
  • M. Mitchell connected on a pair from the charity stripe with 1:22 remaining, tying the game at 59.
  • Keifonna Ferguson was fouled for Kutztown at the 1:09 mark and she went to the line, sinking a pair of free throws.
  • The Lady Knights came down the floor, missing a three-point attempt. Kutztown grabbed the rebound and Gannon ensued with a foul.
  • Kutztown converted four free throws in the last 12 seconds to seal a 65-59 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon converted 14 of its 40 shots, a 35% clip. Kutztown went 18 of 52 from the field (34.6%).
  • There were five ties and five lead changes throughout the game.
  • Lauren Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) led the Lady Knights with eight rebounds and a season-high five assists.
  • The Lady Knights out-rebounded their second opponent of the season, 34-26.
  • Gannon was 8 of 26 from behind the arc, marking the sixth consecutive game of making at least eight three-pointers.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark)'s 26-point effort against the Golden Bears marked three consecutive 20+ point performances. Mitchell also accomplished that feat last season against Seton Hill (33), California (Pa.) (26), and Clarion (27).
  • The Lady Knights lost their first game of the season when leading at halftime (29-19). Gannon was 5-0 this season when leading at the break.
  • Rourke tallied her eighth double-digit game in nine tries this season with 15 at Kutztown.
  • Gannon made a season-most 23 free throws in the game.
