LaCava Nets Game-Winner; Lady Knights Escape With 79-77 Victory Over Wheeling Jesuit

  • The Short Story: Gannon Women's Basketball was victorious over Wheeling Jesuit, 79-77, after Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) hit a jumper as time expired. LaCava tied a career-high with16 points in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon set the tone, scoring eight straight points to begin the game. Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) both rattled home three-pointers in the first minute and 46 seconds.
  • Wheeling Jesuit climbed back to within 10-9 after Chenelle Moore connected on a jumper at the 5:17 mark of the first quarter.
  • Rourke hit her second three of the quarter to put Gannon back up, 15-9, at the 2:36 mark.
  • Gannon led, 24-15, after the first 10 minutes of action. Rourke and M. Mitchell each tallied 10 points.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) put Gannon on top by double-digits, 26-15, to begin the second quarter.
  • The Cardinals made a 10-4 run over the middle part of the quarter to pull within 30-25. Gannon followed with a 9-2 run of its own to head to halftime with a 39-27 lead.
  • Rourke hit a three-pointer at the 7:06 mark of the third quarter to push the Lady Knight lead to 50-36.
  • The Cardinals and Lady Knights each scored 20 points in the quarter and Gannon led 59-47 headed to the fourth quarter.
  • Wheeling Jesuit began the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run in the opening 1:58. The Cardinals cut the lead to 61-57.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) hit a bucket at the 6:27 mark of the fourth to push Gannon's lead back to 65-57.
  • Gannon led 76-72 with under a minute to play before Mariah Callen hit a three to pull the Cardinals to within a point, 76-75.
  • A Gannon turnover and Chanelle Moore layup with 16 seconds left gave Wheeling Jesuit its first lead of the game, 77-76.
  • M. Mitchell was fouled with just 10 ticks left, going to the charity stripe and splitting the pair. Gannon and Wheeling Jesuit were all tied up at 77.
  • Lauren Lipscomb tried to give Wheeling Jesuit the win with two seconds left as she drove to the hole. She made the basket but was called for an offensive foul. Gannon called timeout and advanced the ball to its front court.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) inbounded the ball to Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) where she lined up and connected on the game-winning basket as Gannon won, 79-77.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon shot 64 percent from the field. The Lady Knights made 32 of 50 shots. Wheeling Jesuit went 28 of 61 from the floor (45.9%).
  • The Lady Knights also went 76.9% (10-13) from behind the three-point arc.
  • Gannon led for all but six seconds in the game.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • LaCava's 16 points tied a career-high after also notching 16 points at East Stroudsburg last Saturday.
  • Gannon shot 60 percent from the floor for the first time since Jan. 9, 2010 against Bloomsburg (36-60).
  • 76.9 percent from three-point range was the Lady Knights' best mark since Jan. 30, 2003, at Ashland. Gannon made seven-of-eight (87.5%) three-pointers in that game.
  • M. Mitchell scored her sixth 20+ point game of the season with 23 against the Cardinals.
  • Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) recorded a career-high six assists.
  • Gannon still leads the all-time record, 6-1.
  • Rourke tallied her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season with a career-high 19 points against the Cardinals.

  • Gannon returns home on Dec. 30 after a 41-day break. The Lady Knights take on the Indiana (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
