ERIE, Pa.- The Gannon women's soccer team earned the No. 6 seed in the 2017 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament. The announcement came via the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Selection Show which aired live Monday night at
www.ncaa.com.
Gannon will be making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons and the fourth in the last nine years. The Lady Knights also participated in the 2009, 2012 and 2015 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
Head coach
Colin Petersen's club will play in the 48-team NCAA Division II Tournament as the Atlantic Region's No. 6 seed and will travel to East Stroudsburg Friday, November 10 at 2 p.m. to take on No. 3 seed West Virginia Wesleyan.
No. 2 East Stroudsburg will receive a first-round bye and host the Gannon-West Virginia Wesleyan winner on Sunday, November 12 at 2 p.m.
The other half of the Atlantic region bracket will be hosted by No. 1 seed West Chester. No. 4 Kutztown will face No. 5 Notre Dame (Ohio) at WCU on Friday, November 12 at 12 p.m.
West Chester earned a first-round bye and will host the winner of Kutztown-Notre Dame on Sunday, November 12 at noon.
The two subregional winners will meet the following weekend for the Atlantic Region championship at a neutral site of the top remaining seed in the East region.
Gannon is looking for its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. The Lady Knights dropped a 2-1 decision to Edinboro in 2015. The 2012 squad was defeated by West Virginia Wesleyan 2-0 in a match played at West Chester. Gannon battled Indiana (Pa.) to a scoreless tie in its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, but was eliminated on penalty kicks, 5-4.
