No. 9 Women’s Soccer Set for NCAA Tournament, Faces Bloomsburg in First Round

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team will make its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament following another outstanding regular season. Head coach Colin Petersen's team was awarded the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Regional on Monday night.

The Golden Knights will meet PSAC East foe Bloomsburg (10-6-2), the fifth seed, on Friday, November 21. No. 1 seed Shepherd (11-1-6) is hosting the top portion of the bracket winner with the winner moving on to face the Golden Rams on Sunday, November 23.

Gannon won the PSAC West regular season title but was upset by eventual PSAC champion Shepherd in the PSAC Quarterfinals by a 2-0 score. It was just the second loss of the season as the Golden Knights bring a 15-2-2 record into the NCAA Tournament.

Petersen's squad climbed as high as sixth in the national rankings and were ranked ninth in last week's United Soccer Coaches Top 25.  Gannon opened the season with eight straight wins. After a tie the Golden Knights ran off five more wins. The 15 victories are tied for fourth in a season.

Gannon looks to continue its recent success in the NCAA Tournament. Two years ago, they enjoyed a magical run to the Elite Eight after entering the Atlantic Regional as the No. 4 seed. Last year the Golden Knights won twice in the NCAA's to reach the Sweet 16 before falling to Shepherd in the Atlantic Regional finals.

Bloomsburg lost to Millersville in the opening round of the 2-1 as the Huskies have now lost four of their last five matches.

A total of 56 teams were selected for the NCAA Division II Tournament with the Atlantic Regional comprised of seven teams. West Chester (13-2-4) is the number two seed and will host a four-team pod.

The Golden Rams face No. 7 West Virginia State (15-4-1) with No. 3 Kutztown (13-5-1) squaring off against Fairmont State (16-1-3), the sixth seed, in the other semifinal.

The Final Four will be played in Colorado Springs, Col. with the semifinals on December 11 and the championship game on December 13.

Additional details for the NCAA Tournament will be released shortly.
