Maggie Mitchell Unloads for 29 Points as Gannon Fends Off Daemen, 68-64

  • The Short Story: Gannon senior Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) used a 25-point second-half to help propel the Gannon Lady Knights to a 68-64 non-conference road victory over Daemen on Tuesday (Nov. 28) night. Mitchell led Gannon with a season-high 29 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daemen jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first three minutes of play, connecting on a pair of three-pointers.
  • Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) buried a three-pointer of her own for the Lady Knight's first hoop, getting back to within 8-4 at the 6:07 mark.
  • Gannon took its first lead on a Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) layup at the 9:49 mark of the second quarter, 17-16.
  • The Lady Knights pushed the lead to five, 25-20, as Sydney Mitchell (Halethorpe, Md./Seton Keough) got in on the scoring action with a layup.
  • Gannon carried a 26-24 edge to halftime. The Lady Knights were 3-0 when leading at the break this season and Tuesday was no different.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) and Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) combined for all 18 third-quarter points for Gannon. Mitchell hit two three-pointers and tallied 12 points in the period. GU led 44-40.
  • M. Mitchell hit another two triples to open up the fourth quarter, knocking down her fifth three of the game at the 7:25 mark of the fourth quarter. She finished with 25 second-half points.
  • Gannon's largest lead was at the 3:28 mark of the fourth quarter, 64-53, after Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) connected from long-range. She finished with five points and six rebounds.
  • Daemen closed out the last three minutes on an 11-4 run but time wasn't on their side as Gannon pulled out a 68-64 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • The Lady Knights were 47.1% from the field (24-of-51), while Daemen shot 24 of 65 (36.9%).
  • Gannon had a season-low 14 turnovers in the game.
  • The Lady Knights held a 28-22 advantage on points in the paint.
  • Gannon was 8 of 22 from long-range, marking the fourth straight game of making at least eight threes.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark)'s 29 points was a season-high and represented her most since a 30-point outburst at Slippery Rock last season.
  • M. Mitchell also hit season-high marks in field goals made (9) and three-pointers made (5).
  • Rourke posted her sixth double-figures scoring performance in seven games this season.
  • Braungart's six rebounds tied a career-high for the sophomore.
  • Gannon senior-transfer Ruta Vetra (Jurmala, Latvia/Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.J.)) played in her first game and tallied her first bucket of the 2017-18 season. Vetra logged nine minutes, knocking down a shot and collecting three rebounds.
