GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • After allowing Wheeling Jesuit to score twice during the top of the first inning, Gannon responded with a single run during its first at-bat. Senior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) and redshirt senior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led off with back-to-back singles. Wiesen then stole third base and scored on a throwing error.
  • Wheeling Jesuit appeared to put the game out of reach early with a 10-1 lead after scoring eight runs during the top of the third inning. Twelve Cardinals came to the plate during the outburst.
  • However, Gannon countered with 10 runs during the bottom of the inning. The Golden Knights had 14 hitters step in the batter's box with eight recording a hit.
  • The big blows were four home runs. The first one was a three-run bomb by redshirt freshman Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) that brought the Golden Knights within 10-5.
  • Junior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) duplicated the three-run homer later in the inning to cut the deficit to 10-8.
  • After a pitching change, redshirt junior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) and Wiesen continued a string of three straight home runs with back-to-back round trippers to tie the contest at 10.
  • DeVita followed with a single, stole second and scored the eventual game-winning run on an infield single by senior Chris Beer (Burlington, Ontario/M.M. Robinson).
  • Despite all the fireworks during the opening three innings, neither team was able to score during the final four frames.
  • Junior Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) set Wheeling Jesuit down in order during the seventh inning to secure the 11-10 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Wiesen topped the lineup with a 3-for-4 showing, scoring three times and driving home two runs.
  • Cardy finished 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs out of the clean-up spot.
  • DeVita completed Gannon's group of multiple-hit performers with two hits in four at-bats.
  • Freshman Nick Fuchs (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) earned his first career victory, allowing one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out three.
  • DiPaolo earned his second save with two scoreless innings, striking out two.

  • Sophomore Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) hit safely in his fifth consecutive game.
  • Gannon's top four hitters finished 8-for-15 with six runs and six RBIs.
  • DiPaolo has yet to allow a run during three appearances this season, spanning four innings.

  • Cardy, Grimone and Restuccia all hit their first career home runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • The nightcap got out of hand early. Gannon plated two runs during its first at-bat. Wiesen drew a lead-off walk and scored on DeVita's single, before Cardy's RBI single accounted for the second run.
  • Wheeling Jesuit countered with a single run during the bottom of the inning, before Gannon exploded for 11 runs in the top of the second.
  • The big blow was a three-run homer by redshirt senior Bobby Roach (Erie, Pa./McDowell) that gave the Golden Knights a 9-1 lead.
  • Wiesen had three RBIs during the inning with a single and triple. DeVita and junior Andrew Wagner (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) also had RBIs. Two runs scored during the inning on errors and one on a passed ball.
