Gannon Baseball Team Drops Pair on Final Day of Regular Season

  • The Short Story: One day after being swept by Gannon, the Indiana (Pa.) baseball team got revenge with its own Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division sweep at Dougherty Field. The Crimson Hawks totaled 16 runs with victories of 7-2 and 9-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Indiana (Pa.) opened the scoring with three runs on four hits during the bottom of the second inning.
  • Gannon answered with a single run during the top of the third inning. Freshman Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) led off with a single up the middle. One out later, he moved to second on a single by freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and scored on another single by junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty).
  • IUP duplicated its second-inning performance in the third with another three runs to push the lead to 6-1. The Crimson Hawks added a single run during the fourth inning, extended their lead to 7-1.
  • Gannon managed one more run during its final at-bat. Senior Eric Lewandowski (Souderton, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) led off with singles. Two outs later, Lewandowski scored on Oruch's single through the left side.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Oruch finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
  • Five Golden Knights finished with one hit.
  • Sophomore Brian Fisher (Coal Center, Pa./California Area) logged two scoreless innings of relief without allowing a hit.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Oruch recorded his seventh multiple-hit game, sitting eighth on the team.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon began the final regular-season game on a high note, scoring the first three runs. The Golden Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead during their first at-bat with the aid of two IUP errors. Wiesen and redshirt junior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa. North Hills) reached on errors. Wiesen scored on an error and DeVita crossed the plate on redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca's (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) ground-out.
  • A third IUP error put freshman Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) on base to lead off the second inning. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Benack, giving the Golden Knights a 3-0 lead.
  • Indiana (Pa.) cut into the deficit with two runs in the third, but Gannon answered right back with two runs during the top of the fourth inning.
  • The Golden Knights loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, walk and infield single. Bellanca increased the lead to 5-2 with a two-run, two-out single to right center.
  • IUP continued to claw, scoring twice during the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Crimson Hawks later tallied five runs on five hits during a decisive sixth inning. After grabbing a 6-5 lead, Austin Mock put the game out of reach with a three-run homer.
  • Gannon loaded the bases with two outs during the top of the seventh inning, but a fielder's choice ended the threat.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Wiesen, DeVita and Bellanca combined to go 7-for-14 with two runs and three RBIs in the top three spots of the line-up.
  • Bellanca went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
  • Both Wiesen and DeVita recorded two hits and scored a run.
  • Oruch finished 3-for-4.
  • Freshman David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) tossed a scoreless inning of relief, allowing only one hit.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bellanca recorded three hits in a game for the third time this season, tying him for third on the team with 11 multiple-hit games. His three RBIs were a career-high.
  • Oruch tied his season-high with three hits, producing his eighth multiple-hit game of the season. He finished the doubleheader 5-for-7.
  • Wiesen recorded his team-best 16th multiple-hit performance while DeVita had his ninth.
  • Lewandowski ended his collegiate career with a 1-for-3 showing, extending his hitting streak to six games.
  • Aaron Cox finished the season with 32 RBIs, tied for 13th place on Gannon's all-time single-season chart. His eight home runs finished second and his four triples tied for sixth. Cox's .646 slugging percentage ranked fifth. His 82 total bases finished tied for ninth.
  • On the mound, Cox's 81 strikeouts tied his freshman total for second-most all-time at Gannon behind his own record of 89 last season.
  • Bellanca was hit by a pitch 12 times for the second consecutive season, equaling the fourth most times in a season all-time at Gannon.
  • Aaron Cox ended his junior campaign third all-time at Gannon in home runs (15), 12th in RBIs (72), 12th in triples (5).
