  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team used a six-run second inning during the opener and a seven-run fourth inning in the nightcap to sweep a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader against Indiana (Pa.) Friday afternoon at Gannon University Field. The Golden Knights posted the sweep by scores of 10-4 and 10-8.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Indiana (Pa.) struck first with three runs on five hits during its first at-bat.
  • Gannon's big inning came during the bottom of the second when the Golden Knights sent 11 men to the plate, scoring six runs to flip a 3-0 deficit into a 6-3 lead.
  • Sophomore Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) drove home the first run with a double to center field. The Golden Knights tied the game with redshirt junior Mark DeVita's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) RBI single and redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca's (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) bases-loaded walk.
  • Senior Sean Sutton (Toronto, Ontario/Brebeuf College) pushed Gannon ahead 5-3 with a two-run single to right center.
  • The advantage increased to 6-3 when Bellanca scored on a fielder's choice by junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville).
  • Gannon added a single run during the bottom of the third inning when junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) drilled a two-out pitch well over the fence in left field for his second long ball of the season.
  • After IUP cut the deficit to 7-4 with a run during the top of the fifth inning, Gannon put the game away with a three-spot during the bottom half of the frame.
  • Restuccia and Wiesen produced back-to-back one-out singles, before DeVita bombed a three-run homer to center field. His second of the campaign gave the Golden Knights a 10-4 edge.
  • IUP went in order during the sixth inning and managed only a walk during the seventh, before falling by a 10-4 score.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Seven of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.
  • DeVita went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
  • Freshman Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) finished 3-for-3 with one run.
  • Wiesen produced a 2-for-3 showing with three runs and one RBI out of the leadoff spot.
  • Restuccia flipped the other end of the lineup with a 2-for-3 game, two runs and one RBI.
  • Aaron Cox went the distance on the mound, striking out nine and walking one.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon reached double digits in runs for the fourth time this season and first time since a 12-4 victory against Clarion on April 11.
  • The Golden Knights had double-digit hits for the ninth time this season and first time since pounding out 16 against Clarion.
  • Gannon's six-run second inning was its most runs in an inning since plating eight during the sixth inning of a 10-5 victory February 8 at Limestone.
  • DeVita recorded three hits in a game for the fourth time in his career and drove home four runs for the second time. He produced his seventh multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Kyle Cox had three hits in a game for the fifth time in the last 15 games, giving him 11 multiple-hit games this season.
  • Wiesen scored a career-high three runs while recording his team-high 14th multiple-hit game.
  • Sutton drove in multiple runs for a team-best eighth time in 2015.
  • Aaron Cox tossed his fifth complete game of the season. He struck out at least nine batters for the fifth time in 10 starts. Cox evened his record at 5-5, giving him the team lead in victories.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Much like the first game, IUP scored first with a single run during its opening plate appearance.
  • Gannon forged ahead with two runs during the bottom of the second inning. Aaron Cox led off with a single and scored on Kyle Cox's triple that was misplayed by the IUP centerfielder. Senior Eric Lewandowski (Souderton, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) followed with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • IUP countered with Ryan Uhl's three-run homer to regain the lead at 4-2 in the third inning.
  • Gannon used another big inning to secure the victory. This time, the Golden Knights sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring seven times with eight hits.
  • Freshman Charles Benack's (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) RBI double and Restuccia's sacrifice fly tied the game at four. A Wiesen RBI single pushed Gannon ahead 5-4.
  • Additional runs were produced by a DeVita RBI double, a Bellanca RBI single and a Sutton two-run double. The outburst gave the Golden Knights a 9-4 lead.
  • Leading 9-5, Gannon got an insurance run with Lewandowski's home run to center field in the sixth.
  • IUP tried to rally with three runs during the top of the seventh inning, but redshirt sophomore Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) eventually shut down the rally.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • All nine starters recorded a hit, eight scored a run and eight drove home a run.
  • Lewandowski went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Wiesen finished 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI out of the top spot.
  • DeVita, Aaron Cox, Kyle Cox and Restuccia had two hits each.
  • Jackson improved to 4-4 with a complete-game performance, striking out seven with no walks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Friday was Senior Day as Bellanca, Dustin Godden (Brampton, Ontario/Mayfield Secondary), Lewandowski, Sutton, Matt Tobin (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and Matt Wilwohl (Erie, Pa./McDowell) were honored between games.
  • The PSAC doubleheader was played under sunny skies, but with temperatures in the 30's. A 15-mile-per-hour wind produced wind chills in the 20's.
  • Gannon scored double-digit runs in both games of a doubleheader for the first time since March 24, 2001 at the University of Findlay.
  • The Golden Knights' 17 hits in the nightcap were the most in a game since having that number during a 20-0 victory March 18, 2012 at Slippery Rock.
  • Gannon's seven-run fourth inning was its most runs in an inning since plating eight during the sixth inning of a 10-5 victory February 8 at Limestone.
  • Lewandowski homered for the first time in his career on Senior Day and recorded three hits in a game for the second time this season. It was his eighth multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Wiesen had three hits for the second time this season, giving him a team-best 15 multiple-hit games.
  • Jackson recorded his team-high sixth complete game. His seven strikeouts tied a career-high.
  • Aaron Cox jumped two spots and into 12th place all-time at Gannon with his 72nd career RBI. He moved into a three-way tie for 12th place with his fifth career triple.
