GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Mercyhurst scored single runs during the second and fifth innings to account for the scoring.
  • Austin Alonge's two-out RBI single to left field plated the first run in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The insurance run in the fifth inning scored on a walk, wild pitch and RBI double by Jake Marinelli.
  • Gannon had a great chance to score during the top of the fourth inning when freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led off with a triple down the leftfield line. However, he later tried to tag up on a fly ball and was thrown out at the plate.
  • The Golden Knights had another scoring chance during the top of the seventh inning. Gannon loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Benack and redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and a walk to junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville). However, Mercyhurst reliever Jake Hall needed only two pitches to induce a game-ending double play.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Gannon put runners in scoring position during the first, fifth and seventh innings.
  • Benack went 2-for-3, producing half of Gannon's four hits.
  • Freshman David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out one and walked two.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Mercyhurst is ranked 21st in NCAA Division II.
  • Benack recorded his sixth multiple-hit game, ranking second on the team.
  • Cricks tossed his team-best fourth complete game while throwing only 67 pitches.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Mercyhurst scored the only runs it would need during the second inning. A walk followed by a double produced the first run, before an error led to an unearned run.
  • The Lakers tacked on an insurance run during the bottom of the fifth inning. Angel Martinez led off with a triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Siegel.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Freshman Kyle Cox's (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) infield single during the second inning represented Gannon's only hit of the game.
  • Kyle Cox started on the mound, surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits in three innings.
  • Senior Matt Tobin (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) tossed three innings of relief, giving up one run on one hit. He struck out two and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Kyle Cox made his second start of the season on the mound.
  • Tobin came out of the bullpen for the first time in his career after 33 consecutive starts.
  • Gannon advanced runners into scoring position twice. Both Golden Knights were picked off second base.
