Gannon Women's Basketball Team Drops Exhibition Contest at NCAA Division I Elite Eight Participant Dayton

The Short Story: Seven months after advancing to the NCAA Division I Elite Eight, the University of Dayton women's basketball team used a 44-6 edge in points off turnovers to turn away Gannon 109-67 Friday night in an exhibition contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The two teams traded the first four points. After a second-chance basket by Dayton, senior Morgan Neighbors (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) hit two free throws to tie the contest at two.
Dayton followed with six consecutive points and never trailed again.
The Flyers eventually led 13-4. The home squad moved its lead into double digits at 17-7 with 4:22 left in the first quarter, before ending the first 10 minutes with a 27-19 lead.
Ashleigh Parkinson's triple nine seconds into the second quarter pushed the Dayton lead back into double digits at 30-19.
Gannon produced a pair of 5-0 runs during the second quarter. The final one came via a three-pointer and two free throws by Neighbors, cutting the deficit to 44-31 with 2:51 left in the first half.
Dayton responded with seven consecutive points and later went to halftime with a 53-32 advantage.
Gannon played a competitive third quarter, but Dayton earned a 30-22 edge in scoring to assume an 83-54 lead heading into the final quarter.
Dayton grabbed its biggest lead of the evening of 44 points on three different occasions during the final 72 seconds, before the final horn sounded with a 109-67 score.

GAME NOTES

Gannon was playing its only exhibition game of the season.
The Lady Knights are listed among others receiving votes in the USA Today Sports Top 25 Preseason Poll and ranked 19th in the Division II Bulletin Preseason Top 25 Poll.
Dayton advanced to the NCAA Division I Elite Eight last season, before falling to eventual national champion UConn.
The Flyers are listed among others receiving votes in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 Poll.
Neighbors led all scorers on both sides with 25 points. The senior guard hit 6-of-8 shots from the field, 4-of-6 three-pointers and 9-of-11 free throws.
Sophomore McKenna Shives (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) was the only other Lady Knight in double digits with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Gannon shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the field, 47.8 percent (11-23) from three-point range and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the free throw line.
Amber Deane led four Dayton players in double digits with 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Saicha Grant-Allen recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Keley Austria and Jodie Cornelie added 21 and 12 points, respectively.
The Flyers shot 50 percent (42-84) from the floor, 38.5 percent (10-26) from behind the arc and 65.2 percent (15-23) from the charity stripe.
Ten Gannon players saw action with nine logging double-digit minutes.
Dayton's big advantages came with points in the paint (50-14), points off turnovers (44-6) and fast-break points (29-2).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Friday's contest was Gannon's first exhibition since playing at the University of Connecticut on November 1, 2013.
Gannon is 2-5 all-time in exhibition games against NCAA Division I schools.
The Lady Knights swept a pair of exhibition games at Kent State (70-61) and the University of Buffalo (63-53) in 2012.

UP NEXT

Gannon opens the 2015-16 regular season Saturday, November 14 against Central State (Ohio) at the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament hosted by West Chester.
Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Lady Knights conclude the pre-determined tournament Sunday, November 15 against Lincoln (Pa.) at 2 p.m.
