Gannon Swimming Faces NCAA Division I Canisius Saturday; Format and Time Changed

Dual Program

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's and women's swimming teams return to dual action Saturday against NCAA Division I Canisius. Due to the wintry weather hitting the Western New York region, the format and time of the dual has been changed to accommodate travel issues. Both teams will swim at their respective schools with the start moved to 11 a.m. Gannon will swim at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool and Canisius will compete at the Koessler Athletic Center. The final home dual of the regular season will mark Senior Day for 11 student-athletes. Admission is free and open to the public.

The change in format and time was in response to multiple factors including the shutdown of the New York State Thruway from Ripley, Pa., through Victor, N.Y. This marks the second time Gannon has competed virtually against an opponent in the last five years. The last time came against SUNY Fredonia Dec. 11, 2009.

The Senior Day celebration will continue, as the Gannon swimming program honors six Golden Knights and five Lady Knights. The list for the men's team includes Logan Bissell (Yorktown, Va. / York), Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep), Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif. / Atwater), Michael Decsey (Mississauga, Ontario / Erindale), Jon Hoobler (Franklin, Pa. / Rocky Grove) and Gary Newcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills). The women's list includes Adelee Choban (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny), Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Salem), Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio / McDonald), Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) and Corinna Luschini (Gibsonia, Pa. / Mars Area).

The Gannon men's team owns a 1-3 mark this season, but did capture the team title at the Westminster (Pa.) Relays to open the season. The Golden Knights recently posted a fifth-place finish at the Wooster Invitational Dec. 4-6. The team claimed a combined 91 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-qualifying times and seven NCAA "B" cut standards during the three-day event. The Golden Knights were led by Chrzanowski and junior Denys Fedorchenko (Zaporizhia, Ukraine/Zaporizkiy Collegium #83). Among conference-qualifying times, Fedorchenko earned a team-best eight and Chrzanowski finished with seven. The senior posted four NCAA "B" cut standards with Fedorchenko taking home two.

The women's squad holds a 2-2 overall mark this season. The Lady Knights clinched team titles at both the Westminster (Pa.) Relays and Wooster Invitational. Prior to the holiday break, the Lady Knights claimed their second team title in three seasons at the Wooster Invitational Dec. 4-6. The Lady Knights compiled 90 PSAC-qualifying times along with nine NCAA "B" cut marks. Junior Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Cuyahoga Falls) led the Lady Knights with five conference-times and four NCAA "B" cut showings. For her performance, Lydic earned the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Swimmer of the Week. Sophomore Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash. / Lake Stevens) also registered eight conference-qualifying standards.

Gannon and Canisius have squared off in each of the past seven seasons. The Lady Knights have won six of the seven duals. Before last season's 116-80 loss on the road, the Lady Knights were victorious in six consecutive meets dating back to the 2007-08 season. The Golden Knights have earned two wins during the same stretch. The Maroon and Gold's last men's win against the Golden Griffins occurred Nov. 1, 2008, when GU posted a 139-121 win.

This season, the Canisius men's and women's teams hold identical dual marks of 3-4. Both teams collected wins against SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Geneseo. The women's other victory came against St. Bonaventure and the men's win against Colgate. In recent action, Canisius was swept by rival Buffalo Dec. 18, prior to the extended holiday break.
