Women's Water Polo Will Nowadly, Assistant Director of Athletics Media Relations

Gannon Women’s Water Polo Splits with No. 6 Redlands and No. 8 La Verne at California Convergence Tournament

CLAREMONT, Fla. - The Gannon women's water polo team earned a split at the California Convergence Tournament Saturday. To open play, the Lady Knights defeated the No. 8 La Verne Leopards at the La Verne Aquatic Center by the score of 10-6. To conclude the Tournament, the Lady Knights were edged by the No. 6 Redlands Bulldogs, 9-8, at the Axelrood Pool. The Lady Knights moved to 6-5 on the season, as the Leopards fell to 1-8 and the Bulldogs improved to 3-9.

Both La Verne and Redlands are ranked in the latest Division III Poll.

In the opening game against No. 8 La Verne, the Lady Knights secured a 4-1 first-quarter score. The Lady Knights extended their lead to 7-3 at the break before adding three tallies in third. Holding a 10-5 lead over the Leopards, the Lady Knights surrendered just one goal in the fourth to en route to the 10-6 win.

Sophomore Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) led the Lady Knights' attack with four goals followed by junior Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) with three tallies. Senior Bailey Gadd (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) added a pair of goals, as freshman Christine Uht (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) tacked on a goal.

Freshman Emily Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) pulled down two blocks to improve to 6-4 overall.

To close out their trip to the Golden State, the Lady Knights were edged by No. 6 Redlands. The Lady Knights grabbed a 3-1 lead over the Bulldogs at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Knights extended their lead to 6-4 at the break. The Bulldogs held the Lady Knights to a goal in each of the final quarters. The Bulldogs broke the 8-8 tie in the fourth with a go-ahead goal for the 9-8 win. 

Leading the Lady Knights were Uht with three goals and Lazenby with two scores. Senior Tricia Gajewski (Fairview, Pa./Fairview), senior Kateyln Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) and senior Kelsey Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added a goal each.

Rodriguez recorded seven blocks in the loss.

Gannon returns to action at the University of Michigan Invitational March 15-16. The Lady Knights open the Invitational against the host Wolverines on March 15 at 8 a.m. In the latest Varsity Top 20, the Wolverines are ranked 20th.
