Matt Tobin's (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) first complete game of the season and
Zack Ranta's (Hamilton, Ontario/Orchard Park Secondary) first home run of the campaign helped the Gannon baseball team earn a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader split against California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon for the second consecutive day. The Golden Knights took the opener 4-2, before dropping a 6-1 decision in the nightcap.
Gannon jumped on Cal during the first game with three runs during the top of the third inning.
Sean Sutton (Toronto, Ontario/Brebeuf College) singled home
Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) with the first run, before Ranta homered down the left field line with two outs for a 3-0 lead.
An unearned run accounted for Gannon's fourth run during the fifth inning.
Bob Roach (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led off with an infield single. The junior then advanced to third on Wiesen's single to right field and scored on a throwing error.
California (Pa.) attempted to rally with a pair of runs during the bottom of the sixth inning, but Tobin stranded a third run at second base with consecutive fly-outs. The Vulcans put the tying runs on second and third with two outs in the seventh, before Tobin closed the door with another fly-out.
Ranta finished 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Wiesen also went 2-for-3 with one run. Tobin finished his first game of the season, surrendering two runs on eight hits. The junior left-hander struck one out and walked nine while throwing 101 pitches.
As it did Friday afternoon at Gannon University Field, California (Pa.) bounced off the deck to gain a split with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap. The Vulcans assumed a 6-0 lead with one run in the first, three in the third and two in the fourth.
Gannon manufactured its only run during the top of the sixth inning.
Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) led off with a double to center field. The freshman moved to third on an error and scored on a fielder's choice.
Cal starting pitcher G.J. Senchak limited Gannon to three hits.
Matt Wilwohl (Erie, Pa./McDowell) suffered the loss for the Golden Knights after logging four innings.
Dustin Godden (Brampton, Ontario/Mayfield Secondary) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, lowering his ERA to 1.00 through nine innings this season.
Gannon moved to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC Western Division after splitting the four-game series. California (Pa.) is now 11-7 overall and 2-2 in divisional play. The Golden Knights return to action Friday, March 28 against Mercyhurst at Gannon University Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
