Bats Come to Life, Golden Knights Win Second Straight

ERIE, PA- The Golden Knights bats had a strong afteroon as Gannon defeated D'Youville, 11-9, in a non-conference matchup, their second straight win. Gannon has now won two in a row at McConnell Family Stadium. 

The middle innings were where Gannon made it's move. The Golden Knights would score four in the fifth, one in the six, and two in each of the seventh and eighth after trailing 4-2 early in the game.

Six batters had at least two hits in the game, and five players recorded at least one RBI in the win.

Gannon will get back to conference play on Friday when they travel to Cal (PA) for a doubleheader. 


THE KNIGHT CAP

  • Middle Inning Surge- Trailing 4-2 in the fifth, Gannon put together a rally to take the lead. First, Drwe Stangelo would playe a pair with a bases loaded RBI single to make it 4-4. Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) would then scamper home on a throwing error at second as Stangelo tried to steal, and a Tommy Koroly (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) RBI single gave Gannon a 6-4 lead after five. Gannon would get one more in the sixth and two more in the seventh. 
  • Teeing Off - The Golden Knights had six hitters with multiple hits in the game. Of note, Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) was 3-3, while Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) went 3-5 with two runs scored. Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) had a pair of RBI's, and Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) was 3-5 with two RBIs. Parker notched another home run in the win, his fifth on the year.
  • Other Notes on Offense - Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) would record two hits and has at least one hit in three straight and seven of the last eight games ... Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) had an RBI in the win ... Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) would secure a pinch hit single in late innings.
  • On the Bump – In his first pitching outing of the season, Aedan Fowler (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) recorded the win, thworing a scoreless frame in the fifth, allowing just one hit ... nine different pitchers threw in the game ... following a lenghty rain delay, Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) recorded the last two outs to earn his first save of the season.

The Golden Knights return to conference play on Friday with their home opener. Gannon wil face Clarion on Friday for a 1/3:30 pm twinbill at McConnell Family Stadium. Two more games at Clarion follow on Saturday.
