GENEVA, Ohio - The Gannon men's and women's swimming and diving teams returned to action at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights swept Ursuline, Lake Erie and California (Pa.) to improve to 4-1 on the season in dual action. The Golden Knights dropped a close 136-122 decision to Lake Erie, moving to 1-1 in duals while clinching 12 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times.
The Lady Knights captured a dominant 212-31 win over the Ursuline Arrows. In dual scoring against Lake Erie, the Lady Knights defeated the Storm, 180-79. The closest dual of the day came versus PSAC opponent California (Pa.), as the Lady Knights recorded the sweep with a 151-104 win over the Vulcans.
The Lady Knights clinched the sweep off six individual victories and a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The Lady Knights secured seven PSAC qualifying times in the sweep.
Leading the Lady Knights with two first-place finishes each were junior Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio / McDonald) and sophomore Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash. / Lake Stevens). Joseph dominated the freestyle events, taking first in the 200-yard race (2:00.49) and the top spot in the 500-yard event (5:30.08). Summers finished first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.47) and 100-yard butterfly (59.51).
Sophomore Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Cuyahoga Falls) took home the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (53.63) after finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.55), earning PSAC qualifying times. Also capturing a first-place finish for the Lady Knights was freshman Gabrielle Borza (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny), who placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.14) followed by a second place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.58), securing PSAC qualifying times in each race.
Senior Charlene Lichota (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) recorded a pair of second-place freestyle performances in the 1650-yard event (18:46.68) and 500-yard race (5:37.43). Matching Lichota's two runner-up finishes was junior Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg), who took second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.39) and 200-yard backstroke (2:15.07). Sophomore Emily Nottingham (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville) secured a runner-up performance in the 100-yard freestyle (55.09).
In the relay races, the team of sophomore Shannen Lazenby (Erie, Pa. / McDowell), Nottingham, Joseph and Lydic placed second (1:40. 75) in the 200-yard freestyle relay to open the day's events for the Lady Knights. The team of freshman Samantha Favret (Watertown, N.Y. / Watertown), Borza, Knapp and Lydic ended the Lady Knights' sweep with a first-place finish (1:51.53) in the 200-yard medley relay.
On the men's side, the Golden Knights registered three individual top-finishes and a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay including 12 PSAC qualifying times.
In the Golden Knights' 136-122 loss to Lake Erie, the highlight of the night came with a sweep of the top-three positions in the 1650-freestyle race. Sophomore Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario / Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) led the Golden Knights to victory in the event, taking first (16:39.04) followed by freshman Drew Wolter (Clarksville, Md. / Atholton) in second (17:06.02) and sophomore Thomas Herman (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) in third (17:50.65). Lawrence and Wolter each recorded PSAC qualifying times with their performances.
Among the Golden Knights' additional first-place finishes were Wolter in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.92) and sophomore Denys Fedrochenko (Zaborizhia, Ukraine) in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.51) with each registering PSAC qualifying times.
Fedrochenko also recorded PSAC qualifying times in his runner-up finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (47.56) and 200-yard IM (1:59.25). Junior Logan Bissell (Yorktown, Va. / York) also recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.29) and in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.14) with each qualifying for the PSAC.
Junior Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) finished the afternoon with three runner-up finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.12), 200-yard backstroke (2:00.32) and 500-yard freestyle (5:05.63) including PSAC qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle and backstroke events.
Freshman Trevor Durnwald (Sandusky, Ohio / St. Marys Central Catholic) placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (57.20). Sophomore Ryan Carter (Yorktown, Va. / Grafton) earned PSAC qualifying times in each of his third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.63) and in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.13).
The Golden Knights opened the day with a first-place performance (1:29.30) from the team of freshman Matt Loughner (Jeannette, Pa. / Penn-Trafford), Wolter, Chrzanowski and Fedrochenko in the 200-yard freestyle relay. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Carter, Bissell, Durnwald and Loughner placed second (1:40.84).
Gannon returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Case Western Quad-Meet in Cleveland, Ohio against host Case Western, Grove City and Kenyon with the first event set for 1 p.m.
