ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team suffered a 22-10 setback to local rival Mercyhurst Friday night on Mercyhurst's North East campus.
The Lakers exploded for seven goals during the first quarter while limiting Gannon to a pair to hold a 7-2 lead. Mercyhurst extended the lead during the second quarter out-scoring the Golden Knights 5-3.
The third-quarter scoring saw Mercyhurst hold a 3-2 edge in scoring, giving the Lakers a 15-7 edge heading into the final eight minutes. However, the Lakers equaled their first-quarter scoring effort and held Gannon to just two scores to account for the 22-10 final.
It was a balanced scoring effort for the Gannon as seven different Golden Knights scored in the match.
Kyle Lazenby (Fairview, Pa. / McDowell),
Nathan Bean (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) and
Ben Feasley (Takoma Park, Md. / Montgomery Blair) led the effort with two goals each. Goalie
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) finished with 10 saves in goal.
Bean won two of the four sprint-offs in the match while
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) tallied three assists.
Adam Wolf (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington) finished with two steals.
Gannon fell to 0-5 with the loss while Mercyhurst stands at 1-0 after their season opener. The Golden Knights return to action Sunday with two local matches. Gannon takes on Salem International at home at 11 a.m. before making the short trip over to Penn State Behrend to take on the Lions at 2 p.m.
