Liantziris, Yazicioglu Named Gannon Student-Athletes of the Week

ERIE, Pa. – Men's water polo player Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece/) and volleyball player Nehir Yazicioglu (Ankara, Turkey) have been selected as the Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of September 28. This marks the fourth week honoring Gannon's Student-Athlete of the Week and encompasses events through Sunday.

The Gannon men's water polo team hosted the Erie Invitational this past weekend and evened its record at 6-6 with three high-scoring wins. On Saturday the Golden Knights posted wins over Washington & Jefferson 22-7) and Penn State Behrend (24-14), followed by a 26-14 triumph over Mercyhurst on Sunday.

Liantziris, a sophomore drive from Greece, was one of the key components in the three victories. He opened with a pair of goals vs. Washington & Jefferson before accounting for nine points in the win over Penn State Behrend. He found the back of the net four times and assisted on five other goals. He capped off the weekend with four goals and three assists vs. the Lakers. He also had five steals and three defensive exclusions in the three matches.

Yazicioglu paced the volleyball team to two 3-0 wins over the weekend as Gannon played for the first time at the Highmark Events Center since December 1, 2023. A junior outside hitter from Turkey, she tied for the team lead in kills with 11 , adding five digs, as the Golden Knights prevailed over Shepherd 25-21, 25-23, 25-19.

The Golden Knights opened PSAC West action on Sunday against local rival Edinboro and improved to 9-4 with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-22 triumph over the Fighting Scots. Yacicioglu hit .348 while again tying for the team lead with 12 kills. She added seven digs.
