ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team earned an 8-5 win over Penn State Behrend but fell 14-12 to Notre Dame College during Saturday's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) matches at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
The Golden Knights saw Notre Dame score four times before netting their first goal from
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki). Gannon added two more scores from
Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and
Adam Wolf (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington) but the Falcons added three more scores to hold a 7-3 lead after the first eight minutes. A defensive second quarter saw Notre Dame hold a 2-1 scoring advantage to take a 9-4 into halftime.
After Notre Dame opened the third quarter with two scores, Gannon added two goals from Nimrod and one from Wolf to cut into the lead. Gannon put together a comeback effort in the final quarter, out-scoring Notre Dame 5-2 but couldn't overcome the lead.
Wolf added five goals, while Nimrod had three to lead the scoring for Gannon.
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had six saves in goal.
Gannon regrouped in the night cap to earn an 8-5 win over Penn State Behrend. The low-scoring affair featured just one score in the first quarter, with Gannon taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Wolf. The Golden Knights stretched the lead in the second quarter with a 3-1 scoring advantage.
The Lions out-scored Gannon 3-2 in the third quarter to cut the Golden Knights lead to 6-4. Gannon answered in the fourth with a 2-1 scoring advantage to finish out the 8-5 win.
The Golden Knights were led by Takagi with three scores.
Louis Weyand (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and Wolf each tallied two goals.
Neal Zoellick had six blocks in goal.
Gannon now stands at 3-7 overall with a 3-3 mark in CWPA matches.
