ORANGE, Calif. – The Gannon women's water polo team split a pair of matches for the second straight day during their spring trip to California (Pa.). The Lady Knights came up on different ends of both one-point matches, falling to Chapman 12-11 and defeating Whittier 11-10.
Sunday's two matches marked the second and third consecutive one-point decisions for Gannon. After coming up on the short end of the first two, Gannon rebounded for a come-from-behind win against Whittier. The Poets were ranked sixth in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association DIII poll.
In the first match of the day, Gannon and Chapman battled back and forth, with the score tied at the end of the each of the first three quarters. Both teams scored two, three and four goals respectively in the first three frames.
In the final quarter, Chapman held on to an 11-10 lead before
Molly Andrews (Tustin, Calif. / Tustin) scored with six seconds to tie the game at 11. However, the excitement was short-lived for the Lady Knights as Chapman came down and scored in the final second to earn a 12-11 win. Overall the game featured eight ties and four lead changes.
Andrew's late goal was the sixth of the game as she accounted for more than half of Gannon's offense. Also adding multiple goals were
Katelyn Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill. / Lyons Township) and
Bailey Gadd (Golden, Colo. / Lakewood) with two each.
Libbie Guina (Houston, Texas / Clear Brook) had seven blocks in goal.
In the second game, the Lady Knights faced a 5-3 deficit at the half before exploding for five goals in the third quarter. The scoring output tied the match at eight heading into the final quarter.
In the final eight minutes, Gannon was able to out-score Whittier 3-2 to earn the 11-10 win.
Colleen Harriger (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) finished with three goals while Andrews, Gadd and
Emily Sullivan (Wheeling, Ill. / Wheeling) each netted two.
Janelle Bartman (Darien, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) had 10 saves in goal.
