LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team will play for seventh place at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship following an 18-11 loss to George Washington during the second day of the tournament. The Golden Knights will face the loser of the Johns Hopkins-Notre Dame (Ohio) contest tomorrow at 10:15 a.m.
The Golden Knights played even with the Colonials for the first eight minutes, with each team netting three scores. However, George Washington exploded during the second quarter with an 8-2 scoring advantage, taking a 11-5 lead into halftime.
The Colonials added to the lead during the third quarter with five goals. Gannon managed just three scores during the first eight minutes of the second half to trail 16-8. The Golden Knights out-scored George Washington 3-2 in the fourth, but fell by the 18-11 final score.
Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and
Nathan Bean (Houston, Tx. / Cypress Creek) and
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) lead the offensive effort for Gannon with each tallying three scores.
Ben Feasley (Takoma Park, Md. / Montgomery Blair) and
Adam Wolf (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington) both added one goal.
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) turned in a strong performance in goal for the second straight match, turning away seven shots.
Gannon's seventh-place match will kick off at 10:15 a.m. tomorrow. It will conclude tournament action for the Golden Knights.
