ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon swim teams broke three pool records, won 22 events and produced 24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times Tuesday night during a dual-meet sweep of Penn State Behrend. The women easily posted a 220-52 victory while the men earned a 146-134 win.
The women's meet was basically a clean sweep as Gannon won every event it participated in. The Lady Knights didn't compete in either diving event. Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) was a quadruple-winner, capturing a pair of individual events in addition to helping two relay teams obtain gold.
Her 400-yard medley relay team kicked off the night in grand fashion, setting a pool record with a first-place time of four minutes and 10.10 seconds. The team consisted of Kelsey Williams (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Lydic.
The women's meet ended in the same way with the 200-yard freestyle team of Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald), Emily Nottingham (Titusville, Pa./Titusville), Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Lydic touching the wall first in one minute and 40.80 seconds.
In between the two relay wins were a total of 12 individual victories, including two by Lydic in the 100-yard freestyle (53.93) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.28). Both times met PSAC standards.
Williams was a triple-winner. In addition to swimming with the 400-yard medley team, the sophomore won the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.55) and the 400-yard IM (4:47.05). Both performances eclipsed conference-qualifying marks.
The women's individual champions were rounded out by Joseph in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:14.81), Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) in the 50-yard backstroke (28.76), Fischl in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.03), Brittney Camlin (Jeannette, Pa./Hempfield Area) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.12), Nottingham in the 50-yard freestyle (25.20/PSAC time), Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.51/PSAC time), Christina Ruggerio (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.90) and Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) in the 50-yard butterfly (29.25).
In addition to the six PSAC-qualifying times set during individual wins, the Lady Knights recorded four more during non-gold medal performances. Fischl produced two of them in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.10/2nd) and the 400-yard IM (4:54.43/2nd). Summers added one in the 50-yard freestyle (25.51/2nd) while Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) completed the list with a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.32).
The men's competition was much closer as the two teams evenly split the 16 events. Three pool records spurred the Golden Knights to victory. And it didn't take long for the fireworks to start as the 400-yard medley relay team and
Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) set pool records during the first two events of the night.
The 400-medley foursome of
Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep),
Alex Fisher (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area),
Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and
Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) started the flurry with a first-place time of three minutes and 35.72 seconds.
Lawrence followed with his pool record, clocking a gold-medal time of 9:53.63 during the 1,000-yard freestyle. And the freshman wasn't done. He later won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of four minutes and 55.49 seconds. Both times met PSAC standards.
Fisher and Chase headlined the men's performances as triple-winners. Both swimmers captured a pair of individual events in addition to swimming with the 400-yard medley relay team. Fisher captured gold in the 50-yard breaststroke (28.21) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.27/PSAC time). Chase touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.82/PSAC time) and the 50-yard butterfly (23.25).
Ryan Carter (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) claimed the final pool record of the night in the 400-yard IM, out-swimming the competition with a conference-qualifying time of four minutes and 24.21 seconds.
Nine men's PSAC-qualifying times were set during top-four finishes that didn't result in gold medals. Those performances included Wolhaupter in the 100-yard butterfly (54.54/2nd) and the 100-yard freestyle (49.50/2nd), Chrzanowski in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:28.43/2nd) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.22/3rd),
Logan Bissell (Yorktown, Va./York) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.42/3rd) and the 400-yard IM (4:28.07/2nd),
Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African College) in the 400-yard IM (4:32.59/4th),
Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif./Atwater) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.07/3rd) and Carter in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.74/2nd).
The Gannon women's team moved to 6-5 in dual meets while the men improved to 5-4. Penn State Behrend dropped to 2-4 on the women's side and 3-1 on the men's side. Both Gannon swim teams have nine days off before returning to action November 29-December 1 at the three-day Mid-Season Invitational hosted by Wooster.
