ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team was overmatched by the top seed in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championships Friday night, falling to Navy by a 14-4 final score to open tournament play.
The Golden Knights fell behind 7-0 after the first quarter and eventually faced an 11-0 deficit at the half. Gannon battled back in the second half, outscoring Navy 4-3 in the final 16 minutes, however the margin was too much to overcome as the Golden Knights fell by the 14-4 final score.
Gannon's goals were scored by
Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and
Jake Ouellette (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch), who each put away two scores.
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) had 16 blocks in goal.
Gannon fell to 8-9 overall this season while Navy improved to 22-2. Gannon will now face the second seed in the “D” Bracket tomorrow at 6:40 p.m. The bracket consists of Bucknell, George Washington and Washington & Jefferson.
