SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - The Gannon men's water polo team used a five-goal fourth quarter to overtake Notre Dame College during Saturday's road contest, winning by a 13-12 final score.
Gannon held a slight 3-2 edge after the first eight minutes thanks to goals from
Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki),
Nathan Bean (Houston, Tx. / Cypress Creek) and
Adam Wolf (Worthington, Ohio / Thomas Worthington). However, the Golden Knights found themselves trailing 7-6 heading into halftime, following five scores from the Falcons in the second quarter. Gannon netted just three goals in the second.
Notre Dame added to their lead in the third quarter with three goals. The Falcons' defense limited Gannon to just two scores, holding a 10-8 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
However, Gannon rallied in the fourth, tallying five scores and holding Notre Dame to just two to edge out the Falcons by the 13-12 final. Bean scored three of five scores while Takagi and
Jake Ouellette (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) each added one.
Takagi and Bean each finished with four scores while
Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and Wolf each tallied two. Goalie
Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) made six saves and had two steals.
The Golden Knights extended their season-best winning streak to five matches with Saturday's win. Gannon will now host the Division II Championships on Saturday, October 27. Seeding for the four-team tournament will be announced later this week.
