The Gannon baseball team concludes its PSAC schedule this weekend with important games against Cal.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon baseball team heads into its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) series this weekend with hopes for the program's first post-season appearance since 1970 still a good possibility.

It will be Senior Day as Jordan Bergado (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), Peter Grouios (Toronto, Ontario/East York Collegiate Institute), Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex), David Hucsko (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston) and Alex Merkley (Ottawa, Ontario/A.Y. The series will be packed with playoff implications. Gannon enters the weekend with a 14-20 overall record and 9-11 PSAC Western Division mark, putting the Golden Knights in fourth place. Meanwhile, California (Pa.) sits just above Gannon in third place with a 21-14 overall record and 7-8 conference mark.

The top four teams in the PSAC Western Division will qualify for the PSAC Tournament scheduled for May 11-14 in Johnstown, Pa. Indiana (Pa.) is close behind the top-four race with a 7-9 PSAC record. Lock Haven and Clarion enter the weekend with 6-10 marks. Gannon completes its conference schedule this weekend and will then have to wait for the remainder of the Western Division teams to complete their conference schedule the following weekend.

Michael Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) continues to lead the Gannon offensive unit with a .320 average, .534 slugging percentage and .387 on-base percentage. The sophomore is No. 1 on the team in average, triples (3), home runs (3), RBI (29), total bases (55) and slugging percentage.

Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) joins Tomko in the .300 club, hitting .317 with a .413 slugging percentage and .431 on-base percentage.

Tyler Sell (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Landon Wahl (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) have been Gannon's top two pitchers among those who have reached double digits in innings pitched. Sell is 2-0 with a 1.10 earned run average. The sophomore has limited opponents to a .196 average in 16 1/3 innings. Wahl has logged 30 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, posting a 2-2 record and 1.78 ERA.

California (Pa.) has won eight of its last 10 games while bouncing through the rain drops. The Vulcans have seen 15 doubleheaders either postponed or cancelled this season. The squad is ranked sixth in the initial NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released earlier this week.

Four Vulcans are hitting .300 or better. Sophomore Kyle Petty headlines the attack with a .352 average. Seniors Sean Welsh (.317), Aaron Ordy (.316) and Casey Teagarden (.308) are also members of Cal's .300 club.

Randy Sturgill anchors the Cal pitching staff. The junior leads the conference in strikeouts (80) and ranks seventh in earned run average (2.36). The Vulcans staff has produced the league's fourth-lowest team ERA (3.77).

California (Pa.) has held the upper hand against Gannon in recent years, winning the last 11 games in the all-time series dating back to the 2006 season. The Vulcans are perfect against Gannon since the Golden Knights joined the league, sweeping four-game series in 2009 and 2010.
