Gannon Baseball Team Prepares for Clarion Four-Game Series in Erie

The Gannon baseball team begins the stretch run this week with one of its final two conference series.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon baseball team looks to climb back into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) post-season race this weekend when it hosts a four-game series against Clarion. The entire series will be played in Erie, Pa. due to field concerns at Clarion. In addition, the series has been moved up one day in anticipation of inclement weather this weekend.

The series kicks off Thursday, April 14 with a doubleheader at Gannon University Field. Clarion will serve as the home team with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Live gameday statistics will be available at http://www.gannon.edu/athletics/men/baseball/lstats/XLIVE.HTM.

The two programs conclude the series Friday, April 15 at Jerry Uht Park. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. No live gameday statistics will be available for Friday's games.

Gannon enters the series with a 12-18 overall record and 7-9 PSAC mark. The Golden Knights are two games out of the final PSAC Western Division post-season spot with eight games left. Indiana (Pa.) and Lock Haven are currently tied for third place with 6-6 conference records. The top four teams qualify for the PSAC Tournament.

Michael Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) continues to lead the Gannon offensive unit with a .326 average, .528 slugging percentage and .400 on-base percentage. The sophomore is No. 1 on the team in average, triples (3), home runs (2), RBI (28), total bases (47) and slugging percentage.

Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex), Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) and Ryan Turner (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) own batting averages between .289 and .297.

Tyler Sell (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Landon Wahl (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) have been Gannon's top two pitchers among those who have reached double digits in innings pitched. Sell is 2-0 with a 1.10 earned run average. The sophomore has limited opponents to a .196 average in 16 1/3 innings. Wahl has logged 24 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, posting a 2-2 record and 2.19 ERA.

Clarion brings a 5-18 overall record and 3-5 PSAC slate into the series. The Golden Eagles have only played eight league games due to inclement weather, field conditions and a bye week. The squad still needs to make up doubleheaders against California (Pa.) and Mercyhurst.

Junior Josh Beimel tops the team in hitting with a .295 average, .377 slugging percentage and .343 on-base percentage. Sophomore Seth Patterson owns the best earned run average with a 2.38 mark. He has thrown 11 1/3 innings during six appearances.

Gannon swept a four-game series against Clarion last season. The Golden Knights earned 10-1 and 4-2 victories on the road. The squad completed the sweep with 8-5 and 5-3 decisions at home.
