CLERMONT, Fla. - The Gannon softball team concluded play at the National Training Center Spring Games with a split of two games on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights earned a 10-2 victory over Assumption, before falling to Cedarville 10-0. Gannon finishes the trip with an 8-3 record.
In the opening game against Assumption, Gannon fell behind 1-0 before combining for seven runs in the third and fourth innings en route to the 10-2 victory. Rachel Meyer (Wayland, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) started the rally in the third with a double to center field. After Jaleesa Sledge (Olean, N.Y. / Olean) walked, a single from Sam Scott (New Baltimore, Mich. / Anchor Bay) scored Meyer. Ashley Petrone (Uniontown, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) then sent her third homerun of the season over the left field fence to make the score 4-1.
After Megan Dragon (Ashtabula, Ohio / Edgewood) worked a one-two-three inning in the top of the fourth, Gannon added three more runs in the bottom of the inning. A greyhound error and a walk put runners on first and second for Meyer. The freshman homered to left field in just the second at bat of her collegiate career to put Gannon ahead 7-1.
The Lady Knights added two more runs in the fifth and and a final run in the sixth inning to force the 10-2 victory after six innings.
Meyer was 3-for-3 in her first three plate appearances, accounting for four RBIs and two runs scored. Scott was the only other Lady Knight with multiple hits, finishing with two. Kelly Trace (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) added a hit and an RBI.
Dragon improved to 5-1 on the year, allowing just one earned run on four hits. The sophomore struck out eight batters without allowing a walk.
In the second game against Cedarville, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. Gannon recorded just four hits in the game as Kayla Thornsberry struck out five batters in six innings of work.
Meyer continued her hot streak, recording two of Gannon's four hits. Lindsay Corbett (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) and Shannon Zoltowski (Erie, Pa. / Mercyhurst Prep) accounted for Gannon's other hits.
Gannon concluded play at the National Training Center Spring Games with an 8-3 record. The Lady Knights next action comes during the PSAC-WVIAC Challenge in Salem, Virginia March 18-20. Play starts on March 18 with games scheduled against West Liberty University and West Virginia State at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
