ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's water polo team defeated Salem International 14-1 before taking care of Penn State Behrend 22-10 Sunday afternoon at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
Gannon was able to jump on Salem early, scoring 11 of the 14 goals in the first quarter while holding Salem to its only goal of the game.
Tytus Kwiatkowski (Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North) led Gannon with two goals in the first quarter and one in the fourth. Daisuke Takagi (Tsukuba, Japan / Namiki) added two goals for the Golden Knights. Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) added two goals.
Gannon had 23 steals and nine of the Golden Knights 14 goals were assisted. Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill. / Homewood-Flossmoor) and Deven WIlliams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / Alvin, Tx.) each had three blocks.
Gannon earned their second win of the day over the Lions of Penn State Behrend behind multi-goal performances from four Golden Knights.
Gannon held a 5-2 advantage after the first quarter and was able to hold the Lions to just one goal in the second quarter to lead 10-3 at the half. The Gannon offense wouldn't let up, scoring six times in each of the final two quarters and keeping Penn State Behrend to four and three goals.
Greg Naranjo (Coral Springs, Fla. / Stoneman Douglas) scored a goal in each quarter for Gannon picking up seven in all. Gio Martino (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) found the back of the goal six times also adding three assists and two steals. Kwiatkowski and Stephen Espinet (Port of Spain, Trinidad / Maple Leaf) each added two goals. Espinet also had seven of the 31 Gannon steals.
Zoellick had six saves in the match while Williams had five.
Gannon improves to 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in CWPA matches. The Lions now stand at 2-8 on the season and 1-1 in CWPA contests.
Gannon will make the short trip to Mercyhurst College on Friday, October 1 to play the Lakers in a 9 p.m. match.
