ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon baseball team lost two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division games to California (Pa.) Friday afternoon. The Vulcans won the first game 13-3 and then took the second 5-3 at chilly Gannon University Field.
Cal scored four runs in the top of the first inning and then added three more in the second frame of the first game. The Vulcans led 9-0 going into the fifth inning when snow picked up and forced an eight-minute delay. The teams resumed play and California scored four runs in the fifth. The Golden Knights answered with three scores in the bottom of the frame, as
Michael Tomko's (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) single up the middle drove in two runs.
Aaron Andzel (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Gannon. He allowed two hits and struck out two batters to slow the Vulcan attack.
Brandon Crum (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) went 2-2 with a run scored and Tomko had a hit and two RBIs.
In the second contest, GU took a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the third inning.
Jordan Bergado (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) hit a groundball to second base, allowing
Jeff Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) to score the game's first run.
Cal tied the game with a run in the fourth, but Gannon responded with two more scores in the bottom of the frame.
Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis) singled to lead off the rally. He advanced on a Tomko sacrifice and then Crum was hit by a pitch. Jones reached on a fielder's choice, as Casey Teagarden's throw to second base sailed into rightfield, allowing Radwan to score.
Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) followed with an RBI single to right, giving the Knights a 3-1 advantage.
However, California (21-10, 12-2 PSAC) came back with four runs in the top of the fifth inning and Gannon (17-15, 11-7 PSAC) could not rally again.
