CLARION, Pa. - The Gannon University baseball team swept a doubleheader at Clarion Friday afternoon. The Golden Knights won 4-2 and 10-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division games at Memorial Field.
Jeff Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie in the first contest and
Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) recorded six RBIs in the two games.
GU scored early in the opening game, going up 2-0 to start the day. A two-out walk by
Jordan Bergado (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) was followed with a Hoffman home run off Clarion starter Brandon Slater. The Golden Eagles scored a run in both the second and third frames to tie the contest. From there,
Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis) and Slater engaged in a pitching duel. Neither team mustered a hit for three innings of play. In the top of the seventh,
Brandon Crum (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) was hit by a pitch to lead off. After being sacrificed to second, Jones drilled the game-winning home run to put Gannon ahead 4-2. Radwan retired the Eagles in order to end the game.
Radwan went all seven frames, allowing four hits and two runs. He struck out seven and walked none. Hoffman and Jones each had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored. Radwan and
Michael Tomko (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) had GU's other two hits.
The Knights had an easier time in the nightcap. They scored three runs in the top of the first inning, as Hoffman drove in a run with a double and Crum singled in another. Up 4-0, Gannon put the game out of reach with a five-run fourth inning.
Shaine Patsilevas (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led off with a base hit, Jones followed with a single, and
Kyle Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) walked to load the bases. Bergado then walked to score Patsilevas. Hoffman hit another double to clear the bases. Later in the inning, Radwan plated Hoffman with a single. Each team scored a lone run in the seventh to create the final margin.
Brian Gunnell (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer) pitched seven innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits. Gannon compiled 10 hits, Hoffman and
Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) each had two hits and scored twice. Hoffman drove in four runs. Bergado went 1-3 with two runs and two walks.
