Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Struggles During First Day of Fluid 5 Tournament

Sophomore Colleen Harriger recorded six goals in three matches Saturday at the Fluid 5 Tournament, including four against NCAA Division I Wagner.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Gannon women's water polo team found the waters to be rough during the first day of the Fluid 5 Tournament hosted by Indiana University Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights suffered losses to No. 16 Indiana (13-1), Wagner (13-5) and California State-East Bay (21-7).

In the opener, Indiana opened a 4-0 lead after one quarter and 7-0 halftime advantage. The lead stretched to 11-1 after three quarters, before the Hoosiers scored the only two goals in the final frame.

Lauren Myrick (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was the only Lady Knight able to score against Indiana. The Hoosiers are ranked No. 16 nationally and No. 3 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) rankings. Janelle Bartman (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) recorded three saves in the loss.

Gannon held a 2-1 lead after one period against NCAA Division I Wagner, but the Seahawks used a 5-1 edge in the second quarter to assume a 6-3 halftime lead. Wagner extended its lead to 10-4 after three quarters and out-scored Gannon 3-1 in the final eight minutes.

Colleen Harriger (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored four of Gannon's five goals against Wagner. Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added the fifth score. Bartman turned away seven shots against the Seahawks.

In the nightcap, California State-East Bay exploded for 10 goals in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Gannon was behind the eight ball immediately after countering with only two goals. The Pioneers, who were among others receiving votes in the latest national rankings, held a slight 2-1 edge in the second quarter and headed to the break with a 12-3 lead. The difference stretched to 16-5 after three periods and 21-7 when the final horn sounded.

Harriger and Molly Andrews (Tustin, Calif./Tustin) scored two goals each. Myrick, Annie Greenhill (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda) and Kendra Plackemeier (Bonsall, Calif./Fallbrook) chipped in one goal apiece. Bartman made five saves in the final match of the day.

Gannon dropped to 8-17 overall and 0-3 in the CWPA Western Division with Saturday's losses. Indiana improved to 15-7 overall and 1-0 in the CWPA West. Wagner moved to 10-13 overall while Cal State-East Bay increased its record to 18-9. The Lady Knights conclude play at the Fluid 5 Tournament Sunday, March 28 against the University of Michigan at 11:30 a.m. The Wolverines are ranked eighth nationally and No. 1 in the CWPA rankings.
