Gannon Men's Basketball Downs Bloomsburg Behind Brannen's Double-Double

Travis Brannen recorded his second career double-double in Saturday's win over Bloomsburg.
ERIE, Pa.- Gannon used a big rebounding advantage and a double-double by Travis Brannen (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) to beat Bloomsburg 84-62 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game at the Hammermill Center Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights did not trail in the contest and sprinted out to a 40-21 halftime lead. Bloom responded with a 7-0 run to start the second half and trailed 46-36 with 15:58 to play. Brannen made a jumper and then George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) hit a three-pointer with 12:16 remaining to put the home team up 51-37. Brannen followed with a layup and Johnson nailed another triple, giving Gannon a 56-37 lead with 10:36 to go.

A 43-23 rebounding edge keyed the Knights' success, as GU recorded more offensive rebounds (17) than BU had defensive boards (14). Brannen pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, and his spurt to end the first half gave his team momentum going into the locker room. The junior scored Gannon's final 12 points of the stanza, as the Huskies' defense repeatedly left Brannen open on the baseline to help defend a dribble drive. The 12-5 run put the Knights up 19 at the break.

John Reilly's team did not make a field goal in the final 4:11 of the game, as Bloom fouled the Knights eight times in the final four minutes. GU scored its final 15 points of the contest at the free throw line. For the game, Gannon converted a season-high 27 of 35 free throw attempts, including Larry Swann's (Columbus, Ohio/Brookhaven) 12-12 effort. Swann's 12 made free throws are the most by a GU player since February 7, 2008, when Joe Lindsay hit 12-15 tries against Hillsdale.

Brannen scored 26 points on 14-20 shooting and blocked three shots. James Bryant (Spring Valley, N.Y./St. Patrick (N.J.)) added 12 points and six assists. The Golden Knights hit 27 of 54 shots, shooting 50 percent from the field. Gannon outscored Bloomsburg 38-22 in the paint and 17-6 on second chance points.

Trevon Johnson led Bloomsburg with 19 points and four steals. Ruben Britt added 17 points. The Huskies hit just two of 11 three-pointers while shooting 40.8 percent from the floor (20-49).

Bloom (6-5) travels to Clarion Sunday, January 10. GU (5-6) hosts Mansfield at 3 p.m. in a PSAC crossover game at the Hammermill Center. For a complete box score from Saturday's Bloomsburg-Gannon game, please click here.
