Gannon Softball Team Drops PSAC Doubleheader at No. 22 California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Gannon softball team dropped both ends of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader for the second consecutive day Friday afternoon, being swept by 22nd-ranked California (Pa.). The Vulcans completed a four-game season sweep by scores of 8-5 and 4-0.

In the opener, Gannon grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Ashley Petrone's (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) two-out, RBI single in the top of the first inning. Hannah Koenig (Erie, Pa./McDowell), who opened the game with a single, scored the first run.

California (Pa.) responded with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame, aided by two Gannon errors. Both teams scored once in the third inning, before Gannon took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Lady Knights scored twice on a two-out fielding error.

The 22nd-ranked Vulcans rallied with four runs in the fifth inning to assume control at 7-4. California (Pa.) began the rally with four consecutive hits.

The home team added an insurance run in the sixth inning, before Gannon completed the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh.

Koenig led the Gannon offensive attack with three hits and two runs in four at-bats. Petrone was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits in six innings. The senior struck out two and walked two.\

In the nightcap, two California (Pa.) pitchers combined to limit the Gannon offense to four hits during a 4-0 victory. The Vulcans picked up single runs in the first and third innings, before putting the game away with two runs in the sixth.

Gannon dropped to 20-19 overall and 5-9 in the PSAC West with Friday's losses. California (Pa.) improved to 29-5 overall and 10-0 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Sunday, April 19 against Clarion at Gannon University Field. First pitch on Senior Day is slated for 1 p.m.
