ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon baseball team split a doubleheader with Clarion Saturday at Gannon University Field. The Golden Knights won the first game 7-5 and then dropped the second game 5-3.
In the first game, GU scored four runs in the first inning. Kyle Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) walked to lead off the frame and then stole second base. Greg Radwan (Farnham, N.Y./St. Francis) walked with one out and then Kolten Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) lined out to rightfield, scoring Harpster. Tim Lipp (Beaver Falls, N.Y./Blackhawk) followed with a single and Frank Jagoda (Fredonia, N.Y./Dunkirk Senior) walked. Shaine Patsilevas (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) then hit a two-run single to centerfield. Patsilevas attempted to steal second with Jagoda at third base. Clarion threw to second base, but Patsilevas was able to get into a rundown, allowing Jagoda to score.
The Golden Eagles came back with two runs in the second inning, but a Harpster double and a sacrifice fly by Eric Harpster (Erie, Pa./McDowell) put the Knights ahead 5-2. GU added two more scores in the fourth, as Kyle Harpster singled to lead off the frame. After stealing second, Harpster came around to score on an RBI single by Ford Eisenman (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy). Hoffman singled to score Eisenman later in the inning. The runs would prove important as Clarion scored once in the fifth and twice in the seventh. Andrew Petersen (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) came on in relief of starter Bryan Colish (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) to record the game's final two outs.
Colish went 6 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits to get his first win of the season. Patsilevas had two hits and two RBIs and Kyle Harpster went 2-3 with two runs scored.
The two teams had solid pitching in the second contest. Clarion scored all five of their runs in the top of the third inning, while GU scored their three in the fifth.
Patsilevas reached on an error to start the frame and then Jagoda singled to rightfield. Another Clarion error loaded the bases with no outs. After a double play scored one run,
Eric Harpster homered to deep rightfield to make it a 5-3 game. However, Gannon could not come up with another run.
Drew Rojek (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) went all seven innings, allowing five runs on five hits in the loss. John Hynes got the win for the Eagles, throwing five innings and giving up no earned runs.
Gannon is now 4-21 on the season, with a 2-10 record in the PSAC. Clarion is 8-15 with a 3-5 conference mark. The Knights will host California (Pa.) Friday, April 3 at GU Field. The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
