Gannon Men's Basketball Avenges Only PSAC West Loss with 83-59 Victory over California (Pa.)

Goldcamp Records 23 Points and Seven Rebounds in Return

Senior Kyle Goldcamp posted 23 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes during his first game action since December 30.
ERIE, Pa. - Kyle Goldcamp's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) return to the court for the first time since December 30 inspired a packed house at the Hammermill Center and helped the Gannon men's basketball team roll to an 83-59 victory over California (Pa.) before an appreciative Saturday night crowd of 2,235 fans.

Goldcamp entered the game to a standing ovation 2:39 into the game and scored his first points on a lay-up with 14:30 left in the first half. It was the beginning of a big night for the senior forward. His first points also started a 14-1 run over the next five minutes and 20 seconds. Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) had six points during the run. Goldcamp added five while Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) capped the run with a triple at the 9:10 mark.

Gannon extended its lead to 32-11 after Tyler Stoczynski's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) three-pointer with 2:46 left in the first half. California's Julian Logan hit two free throws with one second left on the clock to send the Vulcans to the break with a 37-20 deficit.

Head coach John Reilly's troops built its biggest lead of the evening with a 12-0 run midway through the second half. Stoczynski and Goldcamp split the 12 points. Stoczynski's second triple of the run pushed the Golden Knights in front, 62-34, with 9:46 to play.

California never pulled closer than 23 points the rest of the way. Three free throws from Joe Berenato with 27 seconds left accounted for the final 83-59 score.

Goldcamp led all scorers with 23 points and seven rebounds despite playing only 17 minutes. He was 10-of-13 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Howard and Stoczynski added 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Gannon shot 50.8 percent (31-61) from the field, including a 66.7-percent (16-24) clip in the second half. The Golden Knights shot 37.5 percent (6-16) from three-point range and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the free throw line. The Peach Street kids dominated the glass with a 49-24 rebounding edge.

Jerial Nixon headlined the Cal offensive unit with 16 points off the bench, Berenato and Kelsey Williams added 15 markers each.

California, an NCAA Elite Eight participant last season, shot 37.5 percent (21-56) from the floor. The Vulcans shot 25 percent (5-20) from behind the arc and 50 percent (12-24) from the charity stripe.

Gannon, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II and No. 2 in the Atlantic region, improved to 18-2 overall and 7-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with its seventh consecutive victory, California (Pa.) dropped to 10-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, February 11 at Slippery Rock. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
