ERIE, Pa. -
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) recorded his 13th double-double in two seasons at Gannon and the Golden Knights held the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's (PSAC) leading scorer to single digits for the first time this season as the Gannon men's basketball team clinched a PSAC playoff spot with a 79-62 victory over local rival Edinboro before a sellout crowd at the Hammermill Center.
The victory sets up one of Gannon's biggest home games in recent memory. The Golden Knights host Indiana (Pa.), which defeated California (Pa.) 60-58 Wednesday night, Saturday afternoon at the 'Mill. Both teams are tied for first place in the PSAC West with three games to play. First place is extremely important since the top seed in the PSAC West will host the Final Four this season. In addition, the Crimson Hawks are ranked No. 2 in the latest Atlantic regional rankings released Wednesday afternoon while the Golden Knights are tabbed third.
Saturday's contest will be part of Gannon's annual Pink Zone event and tips off at 3 p.m. Admission to the game is free of charge and all fans are asked to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness and research. Please note doors will close and no additional people will be allowed to enter the Hammermill Center when the arena reaches capacity. Doors open at 12 noon with the women's game to tip off at 1 p.m.
Edinboro initially scored the first five points of Wednesday's contest, before Gannon assumed control. The Golden Knights rolled off a 13-2 run midway through the first half to assume a 17-9 lead. Four different players scored during the run, which was capped by Goldcamp's jumper at the 10:07 mark.
The lead was still eight points when Gannon mounted another sizable run. The Golden Knights scored 14 of the next 18 points to forge ahead 37-19. Goldcamp netted eight of those points, including the first six of the run. The Fighting Scots then scored the final four points of the half and cut the deficit to 37-24 at the intermission.
Gannon opened the second half with seven straight points and held a 20-point lead on four occasions in the first half. Two free throws by
Tyler Stoczynski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) with 9:47 to play gave the Golden Knights their largest lead of the night at 60-35.
However, the game was far from over. The visitors rattled off a 15-2 run and cut the deficit to 62-50 on Chris Bess' triple with 6:22 showing on the clock.
Head coach
John T. Reilly's squad regained controlled with back-to-back jumpers from
Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) and Goldcamp. The Fighting Scots never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way as the Golden Knights completed the season sweep with a 79-62 victory.
Goldcamp led all scorers with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks. The senior forward was 10-of-19 from the field. Lindsey netted 18 points while
Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) reached double digits for the 10th consecutive game with 14 markers. The senior guard needs 13 points to enter Gannon's all-time top 50 in scoring.
Cory Knight (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) came off the bench to score 11 points.
George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) pulled down 10 rebounds as the Golden Knights posted a 49-34 edge on the glass.
Gannon shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from the field, 28.6 percent (4-14) from three-point range, and 84 percent (21-25) from the free throw line.
Bess led Edinboro with 17 points and five rebounds. Gil Cummings and Bobby Stauffer chipped in 15 and 10 points respectively. Joe Jones, who entered the game as the PSAC's leading scorer with 22.5 points per game, finished with nine points. The senior guard was 3-of-16 from the field and 0-of-4 from three-point range.
Edinboro shot 31.7 percent (20-63) from the floor, 40 percent (8-20) from behind the arc, and 70 percent (14-20) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II and No. 3 in the latest Atlantic regional rankings, improved to 21-3 overall and 9-2 in the PSAC West with its third consecutive victory. Edinboro dropped to 17-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, February 21 against IUP at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Wednesday's victory also enabled Reilly to reach another coaching milestone as he recorded his 300th career victory. The 16-year veteran is 300-185 overall and 68-40 in four seasons at Gannon.
