ERIE, Pa. - Aaron Pinckney's three-pointer from the right wing as time expired sent the East Stroudsburg bench into a frenzy as the visiting Warriors stunned No. 4 Gannon 52-49 Sunday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men's basketball crossover game at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon fans must have thought they were watching a game in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), the school's former conference, as Sunday's contest turned into a grind-it-out, defensive affair.
Neither team was able to grab a lead greater than five points in the first half as Gannon took a 26-23 lead into the intermission. The Golden Knights shot only 26.5 percent (9-34) in the first 20 minutes while the Warriors were slightly better at 37.5 percent (9-24).
East Stroudsburg seemed to gain confidence as the game wore on and eventually took a 36-35 lead on Eric Bryan's lay-up at the 13:19 mark. It was a lead the Warriors would never relinquish.
Again, the second half was tightly contested as neither team had a lead larger than four points. Gannon was able to force two ties late in regulation.
Joe Lindsey's (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) long three-pointer with a hand in his face tied the contest at 47 with 2:21 to play.
East Stroudsburg answered on its next possession. Chris Bach, who had a solid inside performance with the absence of Gannon All-America candidate
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), drained a jumper with 1:56 left in regulation.
Alfonso Scandrett (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) followed with a lay-up to forge the game's fourth tie with 56 seconds remaining. Gannon then forced a turnover, but missed a jumper with 10 seconds left. East Stroudsburg grabbed the rebound and called time-out. The Warriors attempted to get the ball inside to Bach, before Pinckney decided to take the shot and drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Lindsey was the only Golden Knight in double digits with 13 points. Gannon shot 35.2 percent (19-54) from the field, including a 50-percent (10-20) clip in the second half. The Golden Knights shot 23.1 percent (3-13) from three-point range and 61.5 percent (8-13) from the free throw line.
Bach was the only Warrior in double digits with 18 points, hitting 8-of-16 shots. He added seven rebounds. East Stroudsburg shot 46.7 percent (21-45) from the floor, including a 57.1-percent (12-21) effort in the final 20 minutes. The Warriors shot 20 percent (2-10) from behind the arc and 57.1 percent (8-14) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, fell to 9-1. The loss snapped Gannon's 19-game home winning streak and 30-game winning streak when leading at halftime. East Stroudsburg improved to 7-4. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, January 10 at Bloomsburg. The PSAC crossover game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
