INDIANA, Pa. - The Gannon men's basketball team got 40 points from its backcourt tandem of
Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) and
Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) while limiting Indiana (Pa.) to 22 second-half points as the eighth-ranked Golden Knights posted an important 73-57 victory Saturday night before 2,050 fans at Memorial Field House.
In the process, Gannon ended IUP's 12-game win streak, handing the Crimson Hawks their first loss since November 25. The Golden Knights also posted a victory in one of the hardest places to win in the Atlantic region as the Crimson Hawks had a 10-1 home record with a 20.5 scoring margin prior to Saturday's match-up.
Gannon netted the first five points and led from start to finish.
George Johnson's (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) lay-up and Lindsey's three-pointer opened the 5-0 lead. Lindsey's second three-pointer 3:34 later capped an opening 14-4 run.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Ashton Smith and Sean Christiansen brought IUP within 33-26 at the 7:29 mark. After the teams traded baskets, Gannon regained control with an 8-0 blitz. Four different Golden Knights scored during the run, capped by two Lindsey free throws which pushed the lead to 43-28 with 3:11 remaining in the half. Gannon eventually went to the intermission with a 48-35 advantage.
Despite a little foul trouble in the second half, Gannon never lost control in the final 20 minutes. The Golden Knights held a lead between 12 and 18 points throughout the final stanza, before securing a 73-57 victory.
Lindsey led the offensive unit with 23 points and has hit double digits in all seven games during
Kyle Goldcamp's absence. The senior guard was 8-of-16 from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. He has averaged 19.3 points during the last seven games.
Howard completed Gannon's double-digit scorers with 17 points, five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Nine different Golden Knights scored during the road win.
Gannon shot 54 percent (27-50) from the field, 41.2 percent (7-17) from three-point range (7-17), and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.
Thomas Young headlined IUP's scoring attack with 14 points. Maurice Polen had a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Ashton Smith chipped in 10 markers.
IUP forwards Gerald Brooks and Darryl Webb entered the game averaging a combined 27.7 points and 18.5 rebounds, but the duo was limited to 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Crimson Hawks shot 48 percent (24-50) from the floor, 23.1 percent (3-13) from behind the arc, and 54.5 percent (6-11) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, improved to 14-2 overall and 3-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with its third consecutive victory. IUP dropped to 14-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, January 28 at Edinboro. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
